Position

Global Energy Monitor is growing our research capacity with the addition of four new Chinese language researchers. These four new hires will work on and/or across various trackers as well as support other GEM projects as needed.  GEM will be hiring a new Chinese language researcher for each of the following program areas: Coal Program, Oil & Gas Program, Renewables & Other Power Program and the Heavy Industry Program.

The Coal team’s research program focuses on producing global datasets that reflect existing and proposed coal-fired power units, coal mines, coal terminals, and the financial institutions that are considering or have provided funding for coal-fired power stations.  The Coal Program will be expanding to include research on methane emissions from coal, oil and gas facilities.  The Coal program currently has the following trackers: Global Coal PlantsGlobal Coal TerminalsGlobal Coal Mines and Global Coal Project Finance.

The Oil & Gas team’s research program focuses on producing global datasets that reflect current and future gas-fired power plants, oil and gas resources and their development, crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGL) transmission pipeline projects and their development, and natural gas transmission pipeline projects and their development.  The Oil & Gas program currently has the following trackers:  Global Oil and Gas Extraction TrackerGlobal Oil Infrastructure TrackerGlobal Gas Plant Tracker and the Global Gas Infrastructure Tracker.

The Renewables and Other Power team’s research program focuses on producing global facility-level datasets that reflect the current and future utility-scale solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, bioenergy, and nuclear landscapes.  The Renewables and other Power Program currently has the following trackers: Global Solar Power TrackerGlobal Wind Power TrackerGlobal Hydropower TrackerGlobal Geothermal Tracker, Global Bioenergy Power Tracker and the Global Nuclear Power Tracker.

The Heavy Industry team’s research program currently focuses on producing global plant- level and furnace-level datasets for existing and proposed global crude iron and steel production plants.  The Heavy Industry Program currently has the Global Steel Plant Tracker. GEM’s Heavy Industry team also co-edits the RENEW-Industry newsletter on heavy industry decarbonization and convenes the Steel Data Network with bi-monthly meetings focused on steel and industry decarbonization. GEM’s steel team is partnered with TransitionZero and Global Efficiency Intelligence to provide the Global Steel Cost Tracker, a consortium of researchers, NGO members to provide the Green Steel Tracker, and IDDRI to provide the Net Zero Steel project which maps out several net-zero scenarios for the global steel sector.

The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.

Note: GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff need not be based in the United States.

Position Summary and Duties

  • Gathering and vetting data, contributing to shared datasets.
  • Assessing the environmental and social impacts of energy projects.
  • Creating, formatting, and updating wiki pages on energy projects on the GEM.wiki platform.
  • Collaborating with other GEM staff members across different project areas.
  • Miscellaneous support for other GEM projects as needed.
  • Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time.

Education & Experience

Applicants who tailor their resume and cover letter to these requirements will be prioritized.

The following experience and skills are required for this position:

  • 1-3 years of experience in energy/environmental/industrial decarbonization research and/or analysis.
  • Native Chinese and fluency in English.

The following experience and skills are desired for this position:

  • Demonstrated analytical experience, including experience in summarizing and presenting data.
  • Professional-level writing skills.
  • Strong research skills, including attention to detail, scrupulous adherence to documented fact, resourcefulness in using online search tools, and basic knowledge of environmental and social impacts of fossil energy production, governmental and business institutional structures, and the global political context of energy.
  • Demonstrated facility with computers, software.
  • Knowledge of wiki formatting; demonstrated ability to master additional technical skills as needed for data development and analysis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and environmental justice.

Pay and Benefits

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, work-from-home position. The salary is $73,444.80 for locations in the United States. Salary and benefits differ for those based outside of the US and may be discussed on an individual basis.
