Job Description

Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Project Manager to work as part of the Heavy Industry Program to lead the development of the new Global Iron Ore Mines Tracker. The project manager may also support other GEM projects as needed. GEM’s Heavy Industry work currently focuses on iron and steel, but will expand to include cement/concrete and iron ore mines in the coming year, and may expand to other sectors in the future.

In order to understand the opportunities and challenges of transitioning heavy industry to cleaner production, Global Energy Monitor’s Heavy Industry Program has built several global trackers dedicated to providing information about the global iron and steel industry, which is responsible for 11% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The Global Steel Plant Tracker (GSPT) tracks all metal production facilities with at least 500 thousand tonnes per annum crude iron/steel capacity. This tracker includes information on location, ownership, production technology, operating status, and more. The Global Blast Furnace Tracker (GBFT) tracks details about age, size, and manufacturer/model for blast furnace units at plants in the GSPT. The Global Electric Arc Furnace Feedstock Project will track details about electric arc furnace feedstocks for electric arc furnace units at plants in the GSPT.

GEM’s Heavy Industry Program is now expanding to build two new trackers, one on cement and concrete production, and one on iron ore mines. This project manager position will focus on the development of the new Global Iron Ore Mines Tracker. The global iron ore mining industry supplies almost exclusively to the global iron and steel industry, but there are no open source datasets providing complete and detailed information for all assets in the global iron ore mining industry yet. In addition to building a tracker for iron ore mines, this project manager will work on special projects within our iron and steel work to build data connections between our iron and steel tracker and iron ore mine tracker, and GEM power trackers.

The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.
