JOB DESCRIPTION – NATURAL RESOURCE SPECIALIST

The Natural Resource Specialist is a permanent full-time position with the Southwest Conservation District, a 501(c3) environmental non-profit organization based in Hamden, Connecticut. Our organization is focused on providing technical assistance, project guidance and educational materials on natural resources conservation, water quality and soil health issues. Our clients are agricultural cooperators, private landowners, and municipalities across Southwestern Connecticut.

This position will conduct field research and data collection, develop plans and implement projects, draft reports and conduct outreach and educational events. Expectations for the position include being comfortable working in the field and performing physical duties as well as competency with computer skills and ability to complete technical office work.

Specific tasks will include:

  • Assist NRCS staff with conservation planning for agricultural producers in the SWCD service area
  • Complete training activities focused on agricultural Best Management Practices both via online modules and workshops in collaboration with NRCS
  • Assist with organization of and content development for educational workshops and field events to promote technical conservation practices
  • Review and inspection of erosion and sediment control and storm water management plans, wetland applications and other environmental documents as requested by municipal commissions
  • Create and present content for presentations, publications and displays focused on natural resource conservation topics
  • Develop and manage outreach and communication tools for partners in the SWCD service area
  • Collaborate with partners to implement watershed management and restoration plans
  • Coordinate with and develop tools for watershed groups and other partners
  • Participate in Connecticut Envirothon, Plant Science Day, and other activities and their planning
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of the SWCD

Expected Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Soil Science, Natural Resources, Hydrogeology, or related fields. Master’s Degree a plus
  • Ability to review and analyze technical scientific reports and plans and respond to those same documents in writing and public meeting settings
  • Relevant work experience in the environmental field in Connecticut, especially site walks and inspections, and sample collection experience desirable
  • Proficient in use of ARCGIS software
  • Familiarity with State and Local laws and regulations pertaining to environmental and land use issues in Connecticut
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Experience with social media and website development is desirable
  • Outdoor field work involving carrying and use of monitoring equipment or installation gear and tools is part of this position. Field work may occur in remote locations requiring foot travel and during weather events such as rain or snow

Compensation:

  • This is a Full Time position (40 hours per week)
  • Salary commensurate with experience ($30,000 to $40,000 range)
