Job Description

Executive Director

Memphis Botanic Garden is a 96-acre garden located in the heart of Memphis whose purpose is to enhance lives by connecting people with plants and by increasing awareness and appreciation of the environment.  Open 363 days a year, Memphis Botanic Garden hosts 260,000 annual visitors to engage with more than 30 display gardens and plant collections in year-round recreation, environmental education, entertainment and tranquility.

The Memphis Botanic Garden has an operating budget of $4 million and a staff of 60. Owned by the City of Memphis, the Garden is managed via an evergreen operating contract on the City’s behalf by the Memphis Botanic Garden Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit, which is governed by a 20-member Board of Directors and an 18-member Advisory Board.

The Memphis Botanic Garden is poised to move from good to great! The next Executive Director will have the opportunity to lead the Garden through the last phase of the 2022-2025 strategic plan and build upon the strong success of the past few years.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) has responsibility for the overall management of the Garden. The ED provides leadership and direction to further the organization’s mission and vision to become a leading botanical institution. This leader will be responsible for setting the priorities and strategy to maintain and build up the Garden’s recent growth.  This leader will interact regularly with the Board, lead and manage staff and will serve as the primary face of the Garden with regard to donors, partners and the general public. The ED oversees and directs the Garden including budgeting, strategic planning, proper maintenance of gardens, grounds and buildings, collections, educational programming, membership development, marketing and public relations, sponsorships, grants and fundraising.

Specific experience with public gardens is not a requirement but desired. An affinity and passion for the mission of public gardens must be demonstrated. Senior-level leadership in a destination-type venue that aspires to deliver an extraordinary visitor experience is highly desirable.

A strong connection to the Memphis community is preferred; the ability to quickly build and maintain personal and professional relationships within the community is required.

A Master’s degree or 10+ years’ experience in the nonprofit cultural field, including government, business management or administrative experience, is required.

The salary range for this position is between $160,000 – 185,000 (which includes a board-approved bonus) and will be commensurate with experience. Benefits include but are not limited to paid time off, healthcare/dental/vision insurance and an employer contribution to a 401k. Additional perks include the Director’s Golf cart to use on grounds and the Directors Table for Live at the Garden concerts.
