Internship Energy Management Intern

Self-Help Credit Union – Posted by beccalamb Durham, North Carolina, United States

Job Description

WHO We Are:

Self-Help started in 1980 with a focus on economic inequality, especially in communities that have faced systemic barriers to building wealth. At the core of what Self-Help does is a drive to create and protect ownership and economic opportunity. In other words, we’re committed to economic justice! Economic Justice means that all communities have the basic infrastructure they need to thrive, from high-quality schools to grocery stores selling fresh food resources that support opportunity at a neighborhood level regardless of demographics, income, or wealth.

Since our founding, we’ve constantly sought new ways to pursue greater economic justice: from providing fair and affordable loans to working with partners to demand that lawmakers change unjust policies.

Self-Help’s internship program is designed to give students valuable experience in a professional setting while broadening their knowledge of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs).  We hope to educate and create a passion for the field of community development in the next generation of leaders.

We are seeking a Real Estate Intern to join our Real Estate Development and Management Team!

Are you interested in helping provide affordable housing and office space, developing properties with a community benefit, providing technical assistance for community-based real estate projects, and providing affordable office and retail rental rates to mission-aligned small business tenants?

The Real Estate Team is seeking an intern who will work with all of their utility providers to collect energy usage (electricity, gas) to build a portfolio of Self-Help’s consumption. They will assist with converting that information into greenhouse gas emissions and quantify their carbon footprint. The team serves a variety of external clients such as non-profit businesses needing office space, underserved communities, and individuals, and our fellow Self-Help Teams. We are also assisting the Credit Union with energy management and sustainability improvements.

WHAT You’ll Do:

  • Compile Utility Data from Self-Help Buildings
  • Process data using relevant greenhouse gas reporting tools
  • Contribute to the compilation of findings

WHAT You’ll Need:

  • Undergraduate students preferred, recent undergrads welcome to apply
  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in non-profit work, education, advocacy, or social work
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • An enthusiasm for learning
  • Strong attention to detail
