Job Description

The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit organization founded by former Vice President Al Gore, is offering a full-time, salary exempt position to work with the Science and Solutions department. . The Energy Associate is our in-house expert when it comes to identifying opportunities and potential barriers in transitioning to a clean energy economy.

Our Washington, DC office is presently closed due to the COVID-19 health emergency.  Therefore, we will accept remote applicants who work/reside in the following states:

CA, CO, DC, FL, GA, IL, MD, ME, NC, NY, OR, PA, TN, and VA.  Relocating to Washington, DC will be required when our Washington, DC office safely re-opens post-pandemic (exact timing TBD).

General Overview:  This role requires a thorough understanding of how energy markets work and the roles of each stakeholder (consumers, public utility commissions and other regulators, utilities, distribution/pipeline system operators, financial institutions, and so on). The position is responsible for tracking and evaluating emerging clean energy technologies, energy markets, electricity generation and delivery system trends, as well as identifying promising new climate and clean energy solutions, climate/energy finance mechanisms, and other important areas of new research and development.

Duties and Responsibilities 

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advising the Science and Solutions team as well as others across the organization on matters relating to energy technology (i.e. solar, wind, nuclear, hydro, CCUS, so on), energy systems, addressing energy poverty and justice, energy and utility economics and markets, power sector reforms, clean energy finance, and other climate change solutions.
  • Monitoring, tracking, analyzing and communicating developments in climate and energy policy (domestic and international), including in the political, legislative, administrative or executive realm.
  • Studying and making recommendations about organizational positions on emerging or rapidly evolving areas of energy technology, energy policy, energy systems, energy markets, utility operations, power sector reforms, clean energy finance and other climate change solutions.
  • Identifying trends, campaigns, events or other developments in such fields that the organization should be aware of.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 1 to 2 years’ work experience in energy markets, energy economics, energy finance (with a focus on clean energy), and/or energy policy.
  • Deep understanding of energy generation and clean energy technologies is a plus.
  • Demonstrably strong quantitative skills and background; ease with calculations.
  • Excellent attention to detail a must and a passion for accuracy.
  • Strong written and oral skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage work on multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communications skills
  • Personal commitment to Climate Reality’s mission and demonstrated knowledge of climate and environmental issues
