Job Description

SSDN Director of Member Services & Operations

  • Position Type: Regular, Full Time, Exempt
  • Reports to: Executive Director
  • Location: Can be based anywhere in the Southeast Regions of the United States (AL, AR, LA, FL, GA, MS, NC, SC, TN, and VA). Must have reliable, high-speed connectivity (phone/internet) and professional workspace (e.g., home office or other quiet, clean space) required. Approximate work hours: 9 am-5 pm Eastern or Central Standard Time (flexible); 40 hours/week
  • Compensation & Benefits: $110,000-$125,000 annually, depending on experience + a robust benefits package that includes 100% employer covered health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your dependents, employer sponsored policies for disability and life insurance, a generous flexible leave policy, remote work allowance, and a 401(k) program with an automatic employer contribution.

Position overview: The Director of Member Services + Operations will report to and assist the SSDN Executive Director with internal operations strategy and management. This role directs the management and engagement of SSDN’s membership and member services. This role also supports the SSDN Executive Director and the Senior Executive & Director of Programs with shepherding the SSDN Strategic Plan and with development strategies for long-term growth and organizational sustainability. Operations and member services implementation will be a primary responsibility of this role, including oversight of internal operations and membership services and member engagement. This position will also liaise and coordinate on a regular basis with SSDN’s fiscal sponsor, USDN.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership

  • Supports the Executive Director and Senior Executive & Director of Programs with the establishment of effective decision-making and operational processes and policies that will enable SSDN to achieve its long- and short-term programmatic and operational goals and objectives;
  • Assist the SSDN Executive Director, Senior Executive & Director of Programs, and SSDN Steering Committee with the implementation of SSDN’s Strategic Plan;
  • Provides thought partnership and expertise to assist the SSDN Steering Committee and other ad-hoc operations-related committees as needed;
  • With the Executive Director and Senior Executive & Director of Programs, provides leadership in the implementation and measurement of current strategic plan priorities and development of future organizational strategic plans and external-facing reports to elevate SSDN’s profile; and
  • Leads the day-to-day implementation of SSDN non-program member engagement operations (in collaboration with the Program Team leadership), including organizational (enterprise level) strategy implementation, professional development planning and guidance.

Direction of Membership and Growth

  • Directs and oversees core membership services and partner engagement activities to ensure high levels of network engagement and peer connection, including member prospecting, new member engagement and onboarding, and ongoing engagement of members;
  • Collaborates with the Senior Executive and Director of Programs on member engagement in programs in ways that are responsive to member needs and membership growth;
  • Directs and oversees the Member Resource Library development and access for members;
  • Directs member peer learning opportunities, with implementation support from the Network Engagement Manager;
  • Directs member surveying and metrics gathering activities annually;
  • Directs the development of communications to members, and other stakeholders, about SSDN’s offerings, membership and services;
  • Supports the Executive Director with strategy for membership growth and impacts to organizational business strategies, including support on strategy around growth its impacts on operations and membership, and other business services that contribute to the long-term sustainability of the organization;
  • Develops and maintains relationships with partners that support the organization’s long-term organizational and network sustainability and growth;
  • Provides direct support to the Executive Director and Development Director on fundraising and development strategies and efforts as requested.
    Direction of Organizational Culture and Internal Operations
  • With the USDN People/Operations Director, directs all SSDN processes for the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of staff working for SSDN, with support from the Administrative Associate, including the integration of human-centered and DEI-focused efforts;
  • Supports the USDN People/Operations Director to ensure organizational and staff compliance with all USDN stipulated human resource requirements;
  • Works with Executive Director and Senior Executive and Director of Programs to ensure completion of HR processes, including the development of employee work plans, employee feedback systems, and employee professional development activities;
  • Works to ensure that SSDN is a supportive and humanizing workplace; supports the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals of the organization; manages a DEI learning budget and supports other forms of staff learning and development as needed;
  • Plans and executes logistics for staff retreats and other annual staff-support and team building activities, with support from the Leadership Team and Administrative Associate;
  • Maintains close communication and direction with SSDN’s fiscal sponsor, USDN, about budget, accounting, and financial reporting needs.

Internal Workflow and Process Management

  • Develops, directs, and monitors workflows for network-facing processes, including membership, sub-grantmaking, and funder reporting;
  • Directs, develops and manages SSDN’s internal controls and policies to ensure solid systems of internal coordination and communication are in place, including ongoing support for standard operating procedures;
  • Troubleshoots and addresses emerging issues around accounts payable and contracts with the USDN account team;
  • Develops systems for timely processing and visibility of contracts and grants, invoicing, and payments, holding SSDN and USDN staff accountable to deadlines and funder requirements and accounting for SSDN’s expected growth of staff and programs; and
  • Facilitates contracts and partnerships via USDN’s contracting and MOU processes.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or 10 years’ work experience equivalent
  • Experience with nonprofit leadership and management
  • Ability to travel as part of this job and as needed, up to 20%

  • Working knowledge of software platforms, databases, and hardware; understanding of how to acquire, organize, analyze and report quantitative and qualitative data
