Full-Time Director of Human Resources

Job Description

The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking a Director of Human Resources to join us in our headquarters office in Charlottesville, VA.  The Director of Human Resources will oversee benefits, payroll, onboarding, compensation, professional development, performance management, compliance, and hiring. The Director will supervise four HR professionals and will provide direction, feedback, and coaching to a highly dynamic and collaborative HR team. They will also work with the executive team to ensure that the HR department is aligned and advancing the organization’s strategic initiatives and goals.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience as a human resources generalist, and will have good working knowledge of all areas of HR.  They are able to establish credibility and a positive rapport with staff at every level, and have an eye for making processes equitable and fair. Must be comfortable presenting to groups of staff and the executive team, and should have experience working in a collaborative environment. Must be able and willing to travel to our offices throughout the Southeast.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and direct the areas of benefits, payroll, onboarding, policies, compensation, professional development, performance management, annual review process, compliance, and hiring.
  • Interweave SELC’s strategic initiatives into all HR areas, making sure HR staff are informed of our strategic goals and how they all connect.
  • Supervise four HR professionals; provide direction, feedback, and coaching to the department.
  • Work with the executive team to set HR priorities and goals; make recommendations for improvements to HR areas and policies.
  • Continuously work to foster a more open and welcoming work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with employment law and required reporting in all areas of human resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years of experience in human resources.
  • Experience as a generalist; demonstrated knowledge of HR function areas.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and implementing HR initiatives.
  • Experience presenting to small groups and conducting trainings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; diplomacy and professionalism in written and verbal communication.
  • Flexibility and adaptability; can merge HR knowledge and experience into a uniquely operating and growing HR department.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations
  • A strong personal commitment to SELC’s mission, including SELC’s deep commitment to being an open, welcoming, diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization.
  • Ability to travel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in HR-related field or SHRM certification.
  • Experience as an HR Director.
  • Experience with a non-profit organization.
