Environmental Paper Network – Posted by NRGJobs Anywhere

Job Description

UPDATE March 29, 2024: This job is no longer available.

About the Environmental Paper Network (EPN)

The Environmental Paper Network (EPN) is a global alliance of non-profit organizations dedicated to catalyzing transformative change within the forest, pulp, paper, and biomass industries, as well as broader society. Our mission is to ensure that production and consumption contribute to a clean, healthy, just, and sustainable future for life on Earth. The Network is organized into three non-hierarchical geographic hubs – EPN North America, EPN International, and EPN China – each with independent staff and steering committees which work closely together.

Environmental Paper Network North America, a project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs, is seeking a Director to lead our network hub. Since 2002, EPN North America has been building capacity and helping a movement collaborate towards our collective Vision. EPN North America’s core competencies are to foster collaboration; identify synergies and links between NGOs and with other key stakeholders; share expertise, knowledge and information; and develop and promote collective tools, resources, and messaging. We influence stakeholders in the pulp, paper and forest products industries — including companies, customers, financiers, and governments — to move towards our shared Global Paper Vision. EPN North America is governed by a steering group of representatives of our member organizations.

About the Position

EPN North America is looking for a dynamic individual who can maintain and enhance our network’s strong position, and successfully establish and execute a strategic vision for its future. The role involves fostering strategic networking among member organizations and with key industry stakeholders. The Director collaborates closely with the Steering Committee, EPN North America staff, and our counterparts in the EPN International and EPN China hubs. The Director is the face of EPN North America globally, and must possess experience in environmental campaigning and coalition building as well as strong verbal and written communications skills. These abilities will play a crucial role in securing resource development opportunities and cultivating membership and relationships with strategic partners.

This opportunity is ideal for someone with a global perspective, a demonstrated track record of working collaboratively with a diverse set of interests, the ability to work independently and proactively, an appreciation for diversity, and a commitment to advancing collective efforts for a better future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning and Program Oversight:
    • Develop and oversee short and long-term strategic, programmatic, and financial goals, in coordination with the Steering Committee and staff.
    • Provide regular progress reports to the Executive and Steering Committee on annual goals and budget.
    • Monitor program effectiveness and identify new areas of work.
    • Conduct routine research and develop resources on key issues.
    • Lead in the execution and oversight of programs, goals, objectives, policies and decisions and ensure successful collaborative efforts toward the strategic plan and the Global Paper Vision.
    • Ensure EPN programs globally are synergistic.
  • Coordinating the Network:
    • Support the Steering Committee in its governance role, fostering its ongoing development and keeping it informed about internal conditions and external developments in order to effectively support membership and steward the mission.
    • Maintain and build strong relationships with member organizations.
    • Participate in the global coordination and communication committee and efforts of EPN North America, EPN International, and EPN China.
    • Integrate justice and equity principles into structures, culture, and programs.
    • Execute bi-annual in-person meetings for the Steering Committee and membership.
    • Attend international membership meetings as appropriate.
  • Fundraising and Relationship Building:
    • Raise awareness about the issues within the foundation community and cultivate new sources of funding for EPN North America and the Network as a whole.
    • Act as the face of the organization with funders.
    • Oversee fundraising plans and ensure appropriate financial resources for network activities and delivery of donor commitments.
  • Communications and Spokesperson:
    • Lead communication efforts, including a strong media and social media presence and messaging aligned with the Global Paper Vision.
    • Act as a spokesperson and coordinator for media relations and inquiries and ensure that the EPN membership is included and highlighted in publicity and efforts.
    • Develop communications on key issues.
  • Staff Management and Administration:
    • Lead, coach, develop and retain a high-performing staff.
    • Foster a healthy and creative working environment.
    • Act as a Project Director for EPN North America’s fiscal sponsor, Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs, and ensure compliance with their policies and procedures.

Qualifications: While no one person may possess all of the qualities listed below, we expect that candidates will demonstrate many of the following personal qualities and professional experiences:

  • Proven affinity with the environmental and social movement and a willingness to become an expert on forest and paper sustainability issues.
  • Compassionate, inclusive, and inspirational leader with high emotional intelligence who has a track record of creating a positive environment of collaborative decision-making.
  • Proven experience as a strategic thinker and coalition-builder, with experience in strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated success in operations and program management at comparable scale, including a strong fundraising track record.
  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking and proven proficiency in both written and oral communication, and the ability to communicate with a diverse set of stakeholders, including membership, staff, Steering Committee, funders, media, industry, policymakers, and other external parties. Comfort representing EPN externally.
  • Ability to work with, engage, and attract membership and exceptional members to the Steering Committee.
  • Excels at working both collaboratively and independently with the ability to manage simultaneous projects and successfully prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Has the capacity for frequent travel as this is critical to building and maintaining relationships with members and stakeholders.
