Full-Time Climate Finance Campaigner

Amazon Watch – Posted by AmazonWatch520 Oakland, California, United States

Job Description

Application deadline: July 11, 2022 at 9 am PDT
Location: Oakland, CA

About us:

Amazon Watch is a growing non-profit organization working to protect the rainforest, advance and amplify the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin, and halt further advancement of the climate crisis. We work in partnership and solidarity with Indigenous peoples, who are the best stewards of the forest, but are increasingly under assault by industrial development, the expansion of extractive industries including oil and mining, the onslaught of far-right regimes, and climate change related catastrophes. We also work closely with partners in the environmental and climate justice movement in campaigns for human rights, corporate accountability and the preservation of the Amazon’s ecological stability, which is now dangerously close to reaching a tipping point.

Amazon Watch is a woman-of-color-led organization committed to racial, social and climate justice. Amazon Watch is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based on race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, political belief, age, gender, sexual orientation or class. We strive to build an organization that is inclusive and representative of our partners and the larger world. As such, we strongly encourage self-identified people of color, people with disabilities, Indigenous, queer and transgender people to apply. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

About the role:

The Climate Finance Campaigner will join our Finance Team, which works to mobilize grassroots action, pressure and/or engage with companies, advocate for government policy change, and shape the media narrative around accountability for financial firms that are currently investing in the industries driving the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and the climate, and disrespect for Indigenous peoples and their rights.

The Climate Finance Campaigner’s primary duties related to this work may include:

  • Designing and implementing campaign strategies that challenge the biggest financial backers of extractive activities in the Amazon
  • Leading engagement with financial industry executives about our campaign goals
  • Evaluating the policies of financial firms and industry associations
  • Supporting Indigenous leaders from the Amazon in dialogue with financial industry executives
  • Researching and writing reports, policy memos, and other advocacy and communication products
  • Engaging with policy makers about the necessity of biodiversity, Indigenous rights, and climate protection in financial regulatory policy
  • Representing Amazon Watch and our organizational goals in coalitions
  • Networking and relationship-building with allies
  • Contributing to grant proposals and reports
  • Developing popular educational materials for Indigenous partners
  • Serving as an organizational spokesperson on matters central to this position

About you:

You are a systems thinker, have a collaborative mindset, and know what it takes to bring together networks to drive real world change. You are committed to racial, economic, and climate justice.

  • Cross-cultural communication: A collaborative mindset and a track record of working effectively in alliance with diverse stakeholders. Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication and self-awareness
  • Research & Writing: Experience researching and writing for publications, whether it be an NGO report, a news outlet article, a legislative bill, a documentary film, or similar
  • Project management: Ability to stay on top of multiple projects, plan backwards, anticipate obstacles and opportunities, and coordinate with multiple colleagues
  • Languages: Proficiency in written and spoken English and Spanish and/or Portuguese

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Previous experience with corporate, especially finance, campaigning

  • Translation and/or interpretation experience
  • Experience working on issues related to the Amazon, land rights, and/or Indigenous rights
  • Proficiency in any Indigenous language spoken in the Amazon Basin
  • If you meet some but not all of the criteria for this position, but you are excited about the possibility of this position, please get in touch. We value and recognize experience that has been unpaid, from the grassroots, or lived experience.

All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
