Departmental Overview

At the Berkeley Food Institute, we leverage University of California resources in partnership with communities to shape a just farm and food system. We envision a farm and food system rooted in urban and rural agroecology, good food access, fair and healthy jobs, and racial equity.BFI connects eight academic units: College of Natural Resources, Graduate School of Journalism, Goldman School of Public Policy, School of Public Health, College of Environmental Design, Haas School of Business, Berkeley Law, and the College of Letters and Sciences, Division of Social Sciences. These academic units on the campus have partnered to create an interdisciplinary institute serving both UC Berkeley students and the general public. We run programs in food systems education and public interest policy, and sponsor and perform rigorous scientific and community-based research. We partner with farms, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, food and agriculture businesses, other universities and advocacy organizations to understand our changing food system and provide data and evidence-based storytelling in four mission areas: urban and rural agroecology, good food access, fair and healthy jobs, and racial equity in the food system.

This position supports the Food Institute Graduate Council by training and mentoring graduate fellows. Prepares learning materials and implements innovative career development programs for careers in agri-food systems. Answers inquiries from students interested in agri-food systems. Organize workshops and panels on agri-food systems for undergraduate and graduate students after assessing needs and interests of students. Collects and reports information needed on educational outcomes for grant-sponsored educational activities.

Responsibilities

  • Applies and implements innovative academic support service models to support and enhance student learning, academic success, and intellectual development through BFI educational programs, including the Food Systems Minor, Graduate Certificate in Food Systems, workforce development programs, and on-campus experiential learning opportunities.
  • Delivers academic programs to students that enhance academic success through course-based, peer-to-peer, experiential and other formats of service for a wide range of learning issues in programs serving undergraduate and graduate students studying agri-food systems, especially those focused on preparing students for careers in organic agriculture.
  • Assesses appropriate needs of students, such as agri-food system academic and career interests and completed coursework, through 1:1 meetings and reviews of transcripts and refers students to specific student programs.
  • Organizes educational events like workshops and panels on agri-food systems for undergraduate and graduate students after assessing needs and interests of students.
  • Serves as liaison to RCNR undergraduate advisor serving the Food Systems Minor, faculty and advising units with classes in the Food Systems Minor and Graduate Certificate in Food Systems, and other campus partners in order to update course offerings, program requirements, and share opportunities.
  • Serves as liaison to campus, industry, nonprofit, government, and K-12 partners hosting internships for students in order to provide up-to-date opportunities for students and maintain active partner relationships.
  • Participates in assessing BFI educational programs to enhance academic success, including by developing and executing evaluation tools that measure success of the program, modifying programs based on evaluation, and sharing results for reporting purposes to funders, including current and future grants.
  • Mentors undergraduates and graduate students, including through the Food Institute Graduate Council, to enhance intellectual and professional trajectories in agri-food systems, and adapts mentoring to specific learning styles and identities.
  • Trains and provides guidance, as well as teaching and learning materials to undergraduate and graduate students and staff who facilitate peer-to-peer educational programs, including through Berkeley Student Farms.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models, including facilitating peer-to-peer learning.
  • Interpersonal skills, including cultural competency and humility to work across languages, cultures, styles, and opinions in a diverse public university context and produce results.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations, as well as community partners.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop strategy, take initiative, and set priorities.
  • Mentoring skills to train and provide coaching and guidance to student workers and student interns.
  • Commitment to BFI’s mission and the practice of diverse, just, resilient, and healthy food systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working for equity and justice in the food system and the desire to engage learners to think about their role in changing the food system.
  • Advanced knowledge of diverse learning styles, linguistic issues and other factors that may influence student success.
  • Demonstrated experience working with agri-food systems education in higher education.
  • Advanced knowledge of agri-food systems education and curricula, including strategies for how to design and evaluate programs for conceptual and practical agri-food systems education in higher education.
  • Bachelor’s degree in agri-food systems education or Master’s in agri-food systems education or a related field.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 1yr, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension with continued funding. This is a monthly paid, exempt position.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $64,400.00 – $88,600.00.
