Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Food Institute (BFI) at University of California, Berkeley seeks to transform food systems—to expand access to healthy, affordable food and promote sustainable and equitable food production. We empower new leaders with capacities to cultivate diverse, just, resilient, and healthy food systems. We focus on three food system themes and emphasize a holistic approach to address these pressing issues: promoting equitable access to good food; advancing fair and healthy jobs in food systems; and accelerating the adoption of agroecology.

Responsibilities

This position involves administrative and coordination involved in establishing and maintaining campus gardens and farms that serve as research, educational, and food production sites for food security. This position will serve as project and communications coordinator for the Campus Farm and Garden Initiative of the UC Global Food Initiative funded Food Security Project. This is an 80% appointment for 7 months with the possibility for renewal if additional funds are secured. The Campus Gardens and Farms Coordinator works with the BFI supervisor, and representatives from the various campus gardens and farms including the Student Organic Garden (SOGA), UC Gill Tract Community Farm, Clark Kerr Garden, and others to support strategic planning and coordination among campus garden and farm projects to address campus food insecurity, fundraising aimed at sustained funding for these efforts, data tracking and reporting, communication and promotion, and overall administrative support.

• Project coordination: Works closely with all project partners to coordinate campus food production and distribution efforts designed to increase food security among students, build skills among students through experiential learning opportunities, facilitate knowledge exchange among constituent programs, facilitate coordination of campus garden staff with constituent programs, and support the continuity of student leadership and internship opportunities across all campus gardens. This will include scheduling regular group check ins as well as direct 1:1 communication by email, phone or in person with each project partner (eg. SOGA, UCGTCF, Clark Kerr) respecting each organization’s governance structure. Convenes project leadership meetings to discuss strategy and project activity planning, finances, logistics, calendaring, promotion, data entry and management. Assures that food security and food safety needs are met.

• Data and finance tracking, management, and reporting: Ensures all project partners comply with data tracking, uploading, and data entry in a timely manner. Compiles data (including budget and expenses), analyzes collective impacts, and writes both internal and external project reports on input from all project partners, the food pantry, and student needs. (See communication and project promotion below for more on external reports).

• Strategic planning, fundraising and grant-writing assistance aimed at creating a robust, sustained, coordinated campus food production, distribution, and experiential learning program, leveraging existing constituent programs. Key funding needs focused on 1) coordinator role, 2) student fellows at constituent programs, and 3) materials and supplies for garden sites.

• Communication and project promotion: Elevates visibility of campus gardens and their importance through coordinated communication and publicity campaigns (social media, press releases, etc.) Creates and maintains project calendar, listerve, Facebook page, bi-monthly newsletter, and/or website. Communicates regularly with each partner organization to identify success stories and testimonials to be featured in the newsletter and project report. Promotes all activities and events through various project channels outlined above. Translates the project findings into policy briefs, reports, press and publications, as noted above.

• Administration: Coordinates budgets, student payroll, HR responsibilities, purchases, calendaring, meetings, and reimbursements through BearBuys.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills:

• Excellent data management, problem solving, organizational, and administrative skills.

• High level of competency with Microsoft excel, and proficiency with WordPress, Constant Contact/Mailchimp, InDesign, or other publishing software.

• Prior administrative experience with keen attention to detail.

• An interest in working in food systems, food security, and/or urban agriculture, and 2 years of project coordination experience.

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and political acumen.

• Demonstrated ability to take initiative working independently and as part of a team.

• Capacity to foster teamwork and cooperation.

• Strong overall leadership capability.

• Event planning experience.

• Experience with website design and management.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in strategic planning preferred.

• Experience with finance/budget management and/or fundraising preferred.

Salary & Benefits

$24.10 – $25.78 Hourly, commensurate with experience.
