Full-Time Global Strategy Director

Job Description

We are seeking a global campaign strategy leader who is driven by the urgent need to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change, by working to accelerate the global transition away from fossil fuel gas.

About us

Established in 2019, the Energy Transition Fund (ETF) is a funder collaborative that supports international strategies to create the conditions for a just and equitable energy transition, in line with the Paris climate limits.

We support civil society organizations working at the regional and global level to secure a just and equitable transition using a range of strategies including communications, legal support, policy reform, diplomacy, financial analysis and engagement, and research. We work with civil society organizations to co-design effective strategies and supports those strategies through grant-making. We are currently supporting projects on four continents in addition to global projects.

About the role

This is an impactful new role to design and drive effective global strategies to align global gas production with safe climate limits.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this role will develop global grant-making portfolios while managing productive relationships with grantees and funders.

In this role, you will:

  • Engage with civil society and funding partners to design strategies to support and reinforce regional strategies to align global gas production with safe climate limits, develop and manage a grant-making portfolio to implement those strategies, and monitor results.
  • Develop global, cross-cutting strategies such as communications, research, diplomacy and movement building, working closely with other staff who are designing regional gas strategies.
  • Proactively build and maintain extensive external networks with experts and civil society organizations to ensure strategies and grant-making are informed by emerging and up-to-date research and insights.
  • Undertake or commission sector-relevant research and analysis to inform the effective development, delivery and evaluation of programs and initiatives.
  • Identify and implement ways to diversify the voices informing our strategies and the types of organizations that we make grants to for cross-cutting strategies.
  • Foster connectivity between partners focused on regional and global gas strategies and connect with grant-making partners that are focused on other parts of the gas supply chain to identify complementarity and synergies.
  • Undertake screening of potential grantees, build and maintain respectful and effective relationships with grantees, solicit and review proposals and monitor active grants.
  • Provide thought leadership on gas within the broader philanthropic community and represent ETF as required.

About you

The ideal candidate is an accomplished, seasoned leader and global campaign strategy expert, motivated to design and implement impactful and effective global strategies to align global gas production with safe climate limits.

You’re a great candidate if you possess these required skills and experiences:

  • At least 10 years of experience in climate change, or a field that provides transferable skills for this role;
  • Demonstrated campaign leadership and management experience, with a track record of designing and implementing strategies to make change, understanding and navigating complex and changing political and economic environments;
  • Strong strategy skills, with intellectual agility and the ability to analyze, think critically, and understand emerging issues and opportunities to drive the transition from fossil fuels;
  • Ability to build meaningful and respectful relationships with diverse partners, including across cultures, and approach relationships with a highly collaborative mindset;
  • A successful record of engaging with funders to articulate clear strategic priorities and build trusting relationships;
  • Experience effectively leading internal and external teams in a collaborative and thoughtful way to build shared strategies and objectives; and
  • Confident and adept public speaking skills, with experience presenting to a diverse set of audiences.

Bonus: you’re an even stronger candidate if you also have these desired skills and experiences:

  • Experience in grant-making and evaluation is a strong asset
  • Subject-matter expertise on fossil fuel gas is a strong asset
  • A second language, especially Spanish, is a strong asset

Location

Location is flexible. You can work remotely from anywhere in the world. Given the global scope of the role, you’ll need to be willing to work flexible hours to connect with collaborators across the Americas, Europe, and various time zones around the world.

Term, salary, and benefits

Generous salary and benefits package in line with experience, adjusted for local cost of living and tailored to the jurisdiction the candidate is in, including a 9% employer pension contribution. This is a full time position, with flexible working hours.
