General Overview
The Area of Focus Manager for the Environment is responsible for aligning service and grant activity, and strategic partnerships so as to achieve the organization’s objectives for Rotary’s new area of focus—the Environment. The incumbent regularly advises Rotary programs and grants staff, including Regional Grants Officers and Regional Grants Managers on the eligibility of Global Grant applications in the Environment Area of Focus; compiles, analyzes, and reports measurement and evaluation data related to the Environment; and serves as a subject matter expert for Rotary staff, senior Rotary leadership and volunteer leadership as well as a Rotary environment resource on training for Rotarians in order to build their capacity to address environmental issues. The incumbent advises in the design of Strategic partnerships that relate to the Environment. The incumbent periodically determines if Rotary’s Environment Area of Focus strategy, definitions, policies and eligible grant parameters need to be revised and makes specific recommendations accordingly. The Area of Focus Manager for the Environment reports to the Director of Programs and Grants.

You Will Have

  • BA or BS degree in a field directly related to environmental studies/science, ecology, natural resource management or related field, with ten years’ relevant work experience, preferably at least half of which is direct field work.
  • Program and/or grant administration for environmental projects experience, particularly with successful projects and activities leading to measurable and sustainable outcomes.
  • Experience serving as a subject matter expert in the development, establishment and management of partnerships with funding agencies and non-profit organizations providing services related to environmental matters.
    • International work experience required in the implementation of environmental programs, preferably in diverse country settings, north and south.
    • Served as an active member in a current or past professional association or organization related to the position’s responsibilities.
    • Experience facilitating collaborative decision-making and building relationships with multiple, diverse individuals, organizations, and institutions.


  • Graduate degree in a field directly related to environmental studies/science, ecology, natural resource management or related field, with five years’ relevant work experience.
  • Study, work, or volunteering experience abroad for a minimum of five years.
  • Work experience directly related to international humanitarian and/or environmental program grant management, including experience in the successful development of grant programs from concept to implementation.
  • Experience working with volunteers in implementing projects and activities.
  • Technical expertise related to the environment with accompanying hands-on experience.

  • Ability to remain flexible in assessing feedback on a new organizational unit and adjusting implementation strategies in response.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative as a self-starter.
  • Ability to advise the organization on strategic decisions affecting its environmental impact
  • Familiarity with, and sensitivity to, working with a variety of individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to quickly identify issues and solve problems.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office and various databases).
  • Knowledge of a second language preferred.

You Will Be Responsible For

  • Supporting Rotary’s Learning & Development in developing processes and mechanisms to educate Rotarians about the environment and climate change, in order to build their capacity to undertake projects and activities that address environmental issues in a sustainable and high-impact manner.
  • Managing the rollout of the environment as a new area of focus, which includes collaborating with Communications and Philanthropy teams, among others.
  • Identifying priority regions to benefit from environment projects, and helping Rotarians channel their activities to address these needs.
  • Advising Regional Grant Officers and Managers in the review of environment Global Grant applications, including how to work with Rotarians in the design of such projects and activities that better ensure sustainable and high-impact results.
  • Supporting training of Rotarians and staff in designing and implementing environmental grant projects through written communications, telephone calls, videoconferences, webinars, and occasionally making presentations at conferences and seminars held in their region.
  • Advising Programs of Scale, a Rotary competitive grant, on proposals coming in through the environment area of focus.
  • Producing educational materials for staff and Rotarians about environment projects.
  • Reviewing advance site visit reports for grant projects and commenting as appropriate.
  • Providing feedback to Regional Grant Managers on random audits of Global Grant files related to the environment and providing performance feedback to Regional Grant Officers as appropriate.
  • Working with senior Rotarian leadership to advise on strategic decisions affecting the environmental impact of the organization
  • Working with the Director of Programs and Grants in identifying and cultivating potential Strategic and Resource partners.
  • Advising the Director of Programs and Grants in evaluating Strategic Partnerships and whether TRF may need to add additional partners to address the environment.
  • Creating procedures to ensure the accurate and timely collection of data to evaluate the quality and impact of grants related to the environment; monitoring data collected and continually identifying ways evaluation measures can best be achieved.
  • Reviewing grant reports and Cadre member audit reports regarding projects and activities addressing environmental issues.
  • Contributing to Trustee, Board and committee meeting items, exhibits, reports, and presentations relevant to environment projects and activities.
  • Serving, when appointed, as a staff liaison to committees.
  • Providing support for, and on occasion participating in, presentations at Rotary International Assemblies, Conventions, Governor-elect Training Seminars, President-elect Training Seminars, etc.
  • Collaborating with colleagues on various projects and special assignments.
  • Traveling to project sites to evaluate progress and provide information.
