Full-Time Writer- Development and Marketing

Southern Environmental Law Center – Posted by devjobs Charlottesville, Virginia, United States

Job Description

Are you a skilled writer looking to put your talents to work for the most effective non-profit environmental organization in the South? Do you enjoy the challenge of translating complex issues into tight, compelling prose that moves readers to action?

If so, we have the job for you.

We are looking for someone who enjoys brainstorming creative concepts and messaging with colleagues and then shifting gears and transforming these ideas into practical print and digital products. Someone who likes the challenge of changing tone and voice to generate customized content for an array of formats aimed at specific audiences—from foundation proposals and reports, to newsletters and advertising copy, to website copy and social media. A person who can juggle multiple projects and be a self-driver—and also collaborate easily and be an effective team player.

Who We Are

If you have heard the Southern Environmental Law Center’s ads on NPR or popular podcasts, caught an SELC attorney interview on 60 Minutes, or read about our work in The New York Times or Washington Post, you already know that we are playing a pivotal role in the biggest, most important environmental issues of our time. Thanks to our 30 years of experience, we are uniquely well-positioned to be the primary guardian of the South’s environment and health in these challenging times. We are the largest, most powerful environmental advocacy organization in the Southeast, with nine offices and over 140 employees. Learn more at SouthernEnvironment.org.

What We Need

Our face-to-face fundraisers depend on the skills and diligent application of our marketing professionals to give them the tools they need to engage and educate the individuals, families, and foundations that support SELC’s work. Therefore, we do all of our grant writing and reporting, development research, graphic design, publications, event planning, and digital communications in-house, with close collaboration among our development and marketing teams.

Due to our stellar 30-year track record of success, the Southern Environmental Law Center receives generous support from premier national and regional environmental funders. By crafting the foundation proposals and reports we submit to our funders, staff writers help SELC attorneys and fundraisers spell out the goals, challenges, results, and benefits of our high-impact law and policy work.

Over the last three decades, we have developed a marketing strategy that has made SELC’s one of the most highly regarded brands in our field. At the same time, we are constantly experimenting with new technologies, new messages, and new approaches for both current friends and prospective supporters. Check out our online portfolio.

At this critical time for our environment, SELC is seeking a gifted writer to work on the breadth of our development and marketing projects. The writer must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree (preferably in a related discipline like English, communications, marketing, or public relations) and at least three years of relevant professional experience
  • Proven research, writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills, and be able to juggle multiple projects, keep track of short- and long-term priorities, and meet deadlines reliably
  • Strong people skills and ease in communicating in person, by phone, and online
  • A collaborative attitude and comfort level with back-and-forth interaction and feedback to produce top-quality products
  • A track record of generating compelling materials that promote a good product or cause.

What You Would Do

You would work closely with SELC’s founder/executive director, 70 attorneys, and senior fundraisers to generate proposals and reports to the generous individuals, families, and foundations that fund our protection work. In partnership with our talented, tight-knit development and marketing team, you would also play an active role in envisioning and producing an array of outreach and engagement tools, including a quarterly newsletter, e-newsletters, website copy, online news feed posts, radio and print advertisements, and handouts for donor calls and special events. This is a great opportunity to work closely with seasoned experts and mentors who can help you take your work and your career to the next level. Staying on top of our 200+ active protection cases and projects is the most challenging—and the most fun and interesting—part of the job.

What to Expect from SELC

SELC enjoys a reputation for professionalism, impact, and accountability, as evidenced by our 100% rating from Charity Navigator.

SELC is also a great place to work. We expect hard work, strategic thinking, peak performance, and teamwork from ourselves and each other, but we value the climate of mutual respect, collaboration, and collegiality that we have established among our staff, board members, and supporters. SELC offers its employees a competitive benefits package and an enjoyable work environment.

The Southern Environmental Law Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to broadening the diversity of its staff in order to strengthen our organization and better serve our mission. We encourage applications from persons of all backgrounds.

The Southern Environmental Law Center just celebrated its 30th anniversary. With nine offices across the region (Charlottesville, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; Atlanta, GA; Charleston, SC; Washington, DC; Birmingham, AL; Nashville, TN; Asheville, NC; and Richmond, VA), SELC is widely recognized as the Southeast’s foremost environmental advocate and leader. This organization addresses a full range of environmental issues to protect the South’s natural resources and all the people who depend on them for their health and wellbeing. Although regional in focus, much of SELC’s work has much broader national and global impact.

SELC works in Congress and state legislatures to inform environmental laws; in regulatory agencies to implement environmental laws and policies; and in the courts to enforce the law, stop the worst abuses, and set important precedents. Our organization works collaboratively with more than 100 national, state, and local groups to enhance their efficacy and achieve common conservation goals. We currently have a staff of over 130 individuals, including 70 attorneys, many of whom are the nation’s leading experts in their respective fields. Learn more at SouthernEnvironment.org.

SELC prides itself on collegiality, teamwork, and mutual respect among its staff and board. We seek to bring these same values to our partnerships with other organizations, communities, and people of all backgrounds who share our mission. The South has a rich natural diversity and an equally rich cultural diversity. SELC is committed to broadening the diversity of its staff in order to strengthen our organization and its effectiveness in responding to the many environmental challenges affecting the South and its people.
