OVERVIEW

Wissahickon Valley Park is an 1,800 acre forested watershed park with over 1 million visits annually.  The Wissahickon creek provides drinking water to over 300,000 Philadelphians.  As part of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park system, Wissahickon Valley offers historic, geologic, cultural, and recreational features while providing critical habitat for a variety of plant communities and wildlife.  Friends of the Wissahickon was founded in 1924 with a mission to conserve the natural beauty and wildness of the Wissahickon Valley and stimulate public interest therein.  FOW is committed to a diverse and inclusive team that engages neighboring communities and the residents of the greater Philadelphia region.

OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVES

Under the supervision of the Director of Land Management, lead and coordinate field staff, volunteer trail crew and seasonal staff to perform a variety of skilled tasks in the field to build and maintain trails and other park infrastructure. Ensure quality work outcomes and safety.  Optimize and coordinate the flow of materials and equipment and collaborate with municipal partners.

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a skilled position emphasizing a variety of knowledge and abilities in the field of sustainable trail construction and maintenance, as well as other park infrastructure such as gates, fences, small buildings, stone walls, foot bridges, etc.  Operating, maintaining and repairing machinery and tools is integral to the position.  Engaging positively with a diverse public is essential.  This position works closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to plan volunteer work days and is expected to carry out responsibilities with minimal supervision.  Most importantly, the Trails Crew Coordinator must be able to efficiently juggle multiple projects, recognize and mobilize human and material resources and perform well under pressure. Typical weekly work distribution is 1-day administrative and 4 day’s in the field.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Coordinates and leads field staff, volunteer crew leaders and seasonal staff to implement the Sustainable Trails program
  • Plan, develop and supervise daily work plans, ensuring quality outcomes; lead public work days – large and small
  • Construction, repair and maintenance of natural surface trails and other park infrastructure using effective sustainable practices
  • Maintain overview and knowledge of park conditions, and conduct zone assessments to identify needed actions, reporting information to supervisor
  • Ensure efficient, effective and safe work practices and environments for self, staff and volunteer work crews. Anticipate unsafe circumstances and take precautions to prevent accidents. Implement and supervise the use of safety protocols
  • Manage and supervise Field Assistant staff, seasonal staff and volunteer work crews through training, task assignment, oversight and progress reviews
  • Conduct and coordinate maintenance schedule for trails and park infrastructure
  • Conduct and maintain accurate inventory of tools, machines and materials, procuring necessary supplies following budget and expenditure protocols; Ensure that the necessary equipment and supplies are available on site, to crew members and are in properly working order
  1. Collaborate successfully with fellow staff members, volunteer crews and municipal partners
  • Attend weekly supervision and team meetings prepared to give field reports and to strategize project plans and responses to issues as they arise
  • Track and maintain accurate records of key metrics
  • Attend bi-monthly staff meetings and organizational events as requested
  • Plan projects 6-8 weeks in advance and finalize with key staff
  • Collaborate closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to align project plans with volunteer corps and public volunteers
  • Develop skills of field staff and volunteers through individual and group training; develop successful professional relationships with volunteer trail crew members; Resolve conflicts among crew members, maintain positive work environment and refer issues appropriately to supervisor
  • Work with supervisor and other FOW staff to employ best management practices and policies to accomplish goals
  • Maintain regular communication with key staff from Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Philadelphia Water Department and other agencies
  • Consistently utilize and improve upon planning and reporting systems

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Valid driver’s license, experience and acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to follow written and oral direction involving multiple task assignments
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to keep accurate records, organize information, follow established procedures and prioritize tasks among several assignments
  • Ability to effectively work for extended periods performing tasks that involve heavy lifting, digging, carrying, brush cutting and operating power equipment
  • Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry loads of 50 pounds repeatedly and on unstable and steeply sloped terrain
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all types of inclement weather
  • Ability to use and perform preventative maintenance on hand tools and power equipment used in natural surface trail construction, carpentry and masonry
  • Ability to clean, organize and inventory supplies, vehicles and equipment following established procedures
  • Ability to evaluate and make sound judgements about safety conditions
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of team and learn new skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including communication and conflict resolution
  • Strong and adept manual dexterity
  • Good eye-hand coordination, good eye site (or corrective lenses) and good hearing
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Google maps, and GIS

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Skills, knowledge and experience building natural surface trails following sustainable design principles and practices
  • Knowledge and proficiency in carpentry, masonry, and other building skills
  • Experience using field tools and equipment including Mini skid steer, Gator, material haulers, chainsaw, mowers, hand saw, loppers, etc.
  • Experience/proficiency operating a mini excavator
  • Experience safely driving large vehicles on steep uneven terrain; hauling materials, unloading/dumping trailers
  • Experience and knowledge of reforestation techniques and invasive plant removal
  • Native and invasive plant identification
  • Bird and other wildlife identification and habitat knowledge
  • Experience writing reports and making public presentations
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • OSHA-10 certification, ISA arborist certification and/or First Aid/CPR certification
