The San Mateo County Sustainability Department seeks a dynamic Sustainability Specialist (Energy) II/III to coordinate our energy efficiency and decarbonization programs.

We are in search of “sustainability champions” with experience working directly with a wide range of community perspectives and backgrounds. Ideal candidates will possess outstanding project management and communication skills to empower public agency staff, community partners, and community members to make meaningful contributions to sustainability. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive workforce and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

Job Duties

The Sustainability Specialist will coordinate the implementation of several sub-programs for the San Mateo County Energy Watch (SMCEW) and the Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) programs. Work will focus on K-12 public schools, small businesses, local governments, special districts, and residents. This will be a limited term position in the Sustainability Department.

The Sustainability Specialist (Energy) will:

  • Help K-12 public school districts and small businesses identify opportunities to save energy and access energy efficiency, electrification, and energy management programs.
  • Establish and build relationships with school districts in partnership with the San Mateo County Office of Education. Increase program visibility to encourage school district personnel to take advantage of supportive programs.
  • Catalog the use of methane gas equipment in buildings using an Excel-based tool and benchmark energy use of buildings on the Energy Star Portfolio Manager online platform.
  • Lead collaborations with organizations – especially Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE), BayREN, and PG&E program implementers – that provide energy resources to school districts, small businesses, and other customer types. Serve as the primary point of contact to help customers identify potential projects and navigate program offerings.
  • Develop partnerships with community organizations and design communication strategies to help small businesses take advantage of best-fit energy programs and incentives.
  • Develop content for a wide range of communication platforms including reports, social media, websites, videos, business letters, brochures, fliers, and other outreach tools.
  • Handle administrative processes for the programs, including monthly invoicing and reporting, tracking performance metrics, and monitoring and updating the budget.
