Sustainability Program Manager (2 year limited term)

The Sustainability Program Manager oversees and helps grow a portfolio of research projects within the Pulte Institute for Global Development focused on sustainability and environmental justice. This includes a full range of professional level work that includes research design, project management, finance, coordination, administrative support and oversight for Pulte Institute research programs. The Sustainability Program Manager supports effective implementation of externally-funded projects, primarily in the Institute’s Innovation and Practice Division (the Innovation and Practice Division connects cutting-edge Notre Dame faculty research to help solve global development challenges), and serves as a critical link between Pulte, faculty/students, implementation partners, and funding agencies by providing budget management, logistics, and communications assistance and identifying technical resources as needed, alongside other general program support. In particular, the Sustainability Program Manager contributes to the management and growth of the Pulte Institute’s research in global sustainability, environmental justice, and climate change, and works with Institute leadership to define and execute strategic priorities within this space. Execution also requires close coordination with faculty experts and other research institutes across campus. The Sustainability Program Manager also assists in the financial management and reporting of the University-funded and grant funded budgets, and will work closely with others within the Innovation and Practice Division and Pulte Institute more broadly.

The Sustainability Program Manager’s essential roles and responsibilities are as follows:

Program Management: Provide independent management and oversight over a portfolio of research projects to support innovative research in areas such as environmental sustainability, water security, conservation, climate change, and other topics in line with the Pulte strategy. Lead communications between program sponsors, key stakeholders, and the Notre Dame research teams, which often include faculty and students. Lead the preparation and management of work plans, budgets, contracts, sub-agreements, reports and other communication as needed. Respond to program requests, liaise with other program staff, and maintain information systems. This includes executing day-to-day administration, budget tracking and compliance, logistics, and work plan implementation tasks.

Proposal Development: Independently lead proposal efforts for research and technical projects through research, writing, and budgeting, and serve as a resource for Pulte proposal teams and faculty in the identification and development of new proposal opportunities. Work with research teams to design and plan research around the world that will contribute further to informing policy and practice spaces, speaking to appropriate research methodologies and approaches as needed.

Linkages and Relationship Management: Identify and cultivate relationships with important actors both within and external to the Notre Dame community who may be instrumental in advancing the Pulte Institute’s Sustainability Agenda. This may independent of or as part of funded grant opportunities.

Communication: In collaboration with Pulte leadership and communication specialists, prepare presentations on Pulte’s research and development initiatives for appropriate external audiences.

This is a 2 year limited term position.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree (5 years) or advanced certification beyond Bachelor’s in the field of sustainability, environmental science, environmental policy, or similar.
• Collaborative work ethic and high degree of independence and initiative required.
• Excellent communication and team coordination ability.
• Excellent relationship management skills and demonstrated ability to work with diverse teams.
• Strong research, project monitoring, and budget management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to learn and use financial systems and implement administrative policies.
• Demonstrated experience in managing multiple tasks simultaneously with a high attention to detail and operational excellence.
• Practical experience across a broad range of programmatic areas and contexts related to global sustainability and environmental justice.
• Ability to travel internationally as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 1-2 years of experience in budgeting, management, and proposal development in topics and contexts related to global sustainability and environmental justice.
• Previous work with funding organizations such as corporations, foundations, and federal agencies (e.g., USAID, DOS, NSF, NIH) preferred.
