Job Description Summary

Assist the Sustainability Director in implementation of the Climate Action Plan 3.0. As the primary data and metrics analyst, this individual will collect and report quarterly and annual sustainability performance metrics, contribute to Penn’s sustainability communications efforts, and complete periodic updates of the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS). Additional duties include management of the Penn Green Fund and Freezer Reimbursement programs, applying for awards, assistance with management of the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, liaise with the School and Center Sustainability Coordinators, and serve as the point person for outside organizations such as the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, AASHE, and the Sustainability Endowments Institute.

Job Description

Sustainability Analyst

Track campus-wide sustainability metrics for energy use, high-performance buildings, transportation, waste minimization, purchasing, academics, communications, and outreach. Prepare quarterly and monthly reports to VP FRES and EVP. Liaise with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) and other organizations to provide updates on CSAP 3.0 progress. Manage internal communications to gather information and to complete the STARS for submittal to AASHE, and other tracking and rating systems, as well applying for external sustainability awards. Manage Penn’s Green Office Program, track progress, review submissions, and aggregate sustainability metrics associated with the program. Manage the Integrating Sustainability Across the Curriculum (ISAC) program, including oversight of applicant recruitment and management of the disbursements of funds. Support the Sustainability Director in managing sustainability intern staff. Create and maintain LEED Credit Bank to assist design consultants and Penn capital project teams with LEED submissions. Support the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee and subcommittees as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, planning, engineering, design, or humanities and 3 to 5 years of experience coordinating/managing sustainability programs or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Masters degree preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Quantitative reasoning skills and the ability to comprehend, synthesize, and analyze sustainability data including metrics on energy use, waste diversion, transportation, and purchasing.
  • Knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices, including: Energy conservation, Waste minimization; Sustainable transportation; Design and planning strategies; Outreach strategies; Commitment to institutional and societal sustainability.
  • Ability to work both as a team leader and member, and complete projects with minimal supervision.
  • Commitment to diversity; ability to work effectively with all constituencies in a diverse institution.
  • Basic financial skills to track transactions and budget expenditures.

Preferred:

  • Experience in strategic planning, project management, team management, partnership building, and marketing;
  • Knowledge of higher education administration and issues;
  • Higher education experience
