Strategy Manager

Location: Flexible, Global location
Reports to: Strategy Director
Salary: Generous salary and benefits package in line with experience. $90,000 – $100,000 USD with healthcare on top if based in the US, adjusted for the market and experience depending on the candidate’s location.

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY

The Stichting Funder Forum (SFF) is a small team supporting a network of funders that work to create a systemic shift away from oil and gas, in service to a safer climate future. Established in 2021, SFF is an informal forum of actors and organizations engaged in assessing and discussing the energy transformations that are taking place globally. To achieve the objective SFF works with both global and regional philanthropies to help enhance existing initiatives or help incubate new initiatives to have the most impact in support of these goals.

To enhance our impact the SFF is seeking a highly motivated and proactive individual to work as their new Strategy Manager, to sit in the SFF Strategy Team, led by our Strategy Director, Alex Doukas.

The Strategy Manager will assist in the identification and development of strategies related to phasing out the use and production of oil and gas, reviewing existing and ongoing strategies while identifying gaps in the strategic landscape and seeking to coordinate philanthropies around strategic opportunities. They will provide robust recommendations on how to accelerate and scale-up opportunities to inform the investment decisions of the philanthropic community. The person will also support in convening on emerging topics in the sector and assist in mapping and identifying key actors across geographies.

The position requires a person with the ability to cultivate and develop successful strategies, who possess analytical and research skills, and an understanding of influencing policy processes. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to grasp political and technical issues, derive insights, and work with a team to translate these insights into actionable strategic recommendations. The candidate should work well across networks and communicate effectively.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Strategy development

  • Support FFOG in identifying, developing, and building out strategies informed by robust data and analysis, informing philanthropies toward more effective grantmaking.
  • Analyse strategy, data, and trends on oil, gas, and the energy transition.
  • Support identification of emerging areas of interest in shifting away from the production and use of oil and gas, decarbonizing the economy and identifying the right actors to ensure consultative strategy development.
  • Understanding risk management, evaluating potential risks and threats, and how to minimize them, to support the development of strategies robust to multiple scenarios.
  • Have a strong understanding of applying key performance indicators, or Evidence, Measurement, and Evaluation (EME) to forecast, understand performance and hold the community accountable.

2. Network engagement and relationship management

  • Consult regularly with members of the FFOG network to understand the strategic landscape and effectively identify strategy gaps and needs.
  • Wherever possible, work closely with FFOG network members to identify institutional homes for nascent strategies. Where there is no natural home for the development of a new strategy, identify partners able to co-develop strategies who are positioned to own & help implement the strategy once developed.
  • Respond to requests for deep-dive analysis from the funder community to inform grantmaking strategy.


CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Minimum 7-8 years of relevant professional experience working on strategy development and delivery, on technical issues in the environmental or energy sectors, at civil society organizations, research institutions, business, or government.
  • Strong strategy skills, with intellectual agility and the ability to analyze, think critically, and understand emerging issues and opportunities to drive the transition away from oil and gas and toward clean energy;
  • Have strong analytical skills, with experience in data analysis (including good knowledge of Excel) .
  • Strong interpersonal skills as well as good communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to write in English fluently, accurately, and concisely.
  • Demonstrated project management experience and an ability to deliver to deadlines.

Preferred (but not required):

  • Deep knowledge of energy systems, climate change, fossil fuels, and one or more sectors involving oil and gas in particular (e.g. transportation, power, industry, upstream and midstream oil and gas, etc.)
  • Strong networks in civil society, climate-related business, government, and/or climate-related philanthropy.
  • Familiarity with strategy, campaigns, and advocacy within the climate justice and/or energy transition space.

The Global Gas Hub is a project incubated at SFF which serves as a central hive for regional, thematic, and global gas campaigns to advance the shared goals of the urgent and rapid delivery of a global gas phase-out.

Location:
Location flexible for the right candidate. Given the global scope of the role, candidates must be willing to work flexible hours depending on location.

Term, salary, and benefits:
Generous salary and benefits package in line with experience. Initial one-year contract with potential for renewal, total $90,000 – $100,000 USD with additional health benefits, adjusted for the market and adjusted for experience.
