Full-Time Stewardship Manager, Boston Community Gardens – Boston
The Stewardship Manager (SM) coordinates, oversees and performs property management and stewardship operations for 56 Community Gardens, City Natives and Leatherbee Woods in Boston, and the Governor Hutchinson’s Field and the Pierce Reservation in Milton. This is a leadership position on the team, engaging with our gardeners, volunteers, and neighborhood partners. The SM will supervise one employee, support signature events, coordinate a significant group of volunteer community garden leaders, and manage individual and group volunteers. The SM is also responsible for following The Trustees’ community engagement and stewardship policies, guidelines, and specific property management plans. They will lead the development, execution and oversight of an annual scope and schedule of work in coordination with the Greater Boston Director and statewide specialist teams. The SM works to support each property’s visitor services infrastructure and revenue generating activities, if applicable, to ensure that visitors have an enjoyable, exceptional, and safe experience at Trustees’ properties.
In This Role You Will:
Stewardship and Conservation
- Ensure that the landscapes, buildings, visitor amenities, wayfinding, gardens and outdoor areas are developed and maintained to The Trustees’ conservation standards and that the distinctive specialness of each property is preserved.
- Work within our organizational tools and systems to ensure that stewardship work on properties supports property plans, Trustees’ standards, best practices, and policies
- Oversee and execute routine grounds, buildings and landscape maintenance and larger landscaping and grounds projects involving staff or contractors
- Conduct annual baseline standards assessments
- Track routine maintenance and performance towards conservation targets
- Deliver enjoyable visitor experiences on the properties and ensures visitor safety and wayfinding
- Provide support for events, programming, and enterprise
- Act as ambassador for the Trustees with communities, recruiting and training volunteers and partners to promote the stewardship work that we do through presentations and responding to public inquiries and face-to-face interaction on site
- Support Boston Director in projects, permits and contracts with partner organizations, and community gardeners
- Maintain communications with our garden coordinators for infrastructure upgrades, routine maintenance, garden clean ups, dispute resolution and collection of garden dues
Supervision and Administration
- Supervise the use and maintenance of work areas, vehicles, tools and equipment to the highest safety standards and ensure that scheduled preventative maintenance is completed on time
- Develop annual work plans for employee and conduct annual performance reviews

Education and Experience
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Park Management, Forestry, Ecology, or another natural resource field and/or at least 3 years’ experience in these areas or related fields
- Minimum 3 years of experience managing staff/volunteers and operations
- A strong commitment to the mission of The Trustees
- Proven leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively manage people.
- Proven ability to work independently and unsupervised
- Familiarity and/or experience managing invasive plants
- Experience managing volunteer programs
- Must have proven property management skills including basic tool and equipment maintenance; snowblower, rototiller and chainsaw experience preferred.
- Excellent written, verbal, and in-person communication skills to work across internal reporting structures, stakeholder groups and in multiple mediums
- Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Candidate must be more than proficient in Excel and in using social media channels
- Enjoy working with a diverse group of people, have excellent people skills and competency working with committees, volunteers, and speaking to the public
- Familiar with Boston neighborhoods.
- Valid driver’s license required for driving Trustees vehicles; must pass satisfactory driver record check
- DOT Medical Card, and other licenses may be required to perform certain functions of the position
- A satisfactory criminal background check (CORI)
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends
- Candidates fluent in two or more languages highly encouraged
Reports to Greater Boston Director; supervises one full time staff, seasonal staff, and volunteers
- Physically hard work; must be able to lift at least 50 lbs., pull and push heavy items, and climb ladders
- Outside work with exposure to all weather conditions
- This position is based out of 200 High Street in Boston as the primary office space
