Position Description:

ACEEE seeks a manager to support the state policy program by leading and contributing to research, outreach, and other activities that will advance equitable clean energy policies in states. This is an exciting position for someone looking to have real-world impact by advancing programs and policies that ensure energy efficiency investments benefit all residents.

The manager will lead outreach and technical assistance activities for multiple states, working in parallel with other program managers. The manager will also research and prepare policy briefs and other publications on important policy issues. The successful applicant will work with a highly respected and widely recognized team of energy efficiency experts and collaborate with other programs across a dynamic organization. The core responsibilities of the position include:

  • Liaise with multiple states, working with state officials and advocates to understand their needs and provide technical assistance.
  • Interpret and analyze legislative and regulatory issues at the state  level, including the role of energy efficiency in climate legislation and regulation.
  • Research and write policy briefs and fact sheets and contribute to reports on important policy issues. We will expect this person to become our expert on one or two subjects.
  • Contribute to ACEEE’s State Energy Efficiency Scorecard and conduct follow-up outreach and technical assistance to states.
  • Develop research projects that support state efforts to adopt and implement energy efficiency initiatives across different sectors.
  • Assist with other research efforts related to state energy efficiency policy and other cross-cutting projects.

The manager will work on projects of high visibility and credibility in the energy efficiency, technology, and policy communities. The position offers unmatched access to national experts in energy efficiency, as well as an opportunity to develop expertise and leadership experience on one or more energy efficiency topics.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

  • Superb organizational and project coordination skills. The position requires experience coordinating complex, long-term projects independently and as a member of a team. The manager must also balance multiple projects, budgets, and deadlines.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills. The manager is expected to produce detailed policy briefs, white papers, fact sheets, and regulatory comments, and to present research results through formal presentations, webinars, and blog posts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. The manager will coordinate and collaborate with numerous ACEEE staff members on cross-cutting research projects. The manager must also maintain relationships with external stakeholders to inform research and broaden the reach of ACEEE research and technical assistance.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter. The manager must be able to work independently.
  • Quick learner. The manager will need to get up to speed on many subjects by consulting with other ACEEE staff.
  • Analytical and detail oriented. The manager will conduct peer-reviewed primary research dealing with quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The position requires a strong commitment to furthering policies and programs that are equitable and inclusive.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural or social sciences with four years of experience, or Master’s degree with three or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated project coordination experience and significant experience with policy analysis.
  • Rigorous coursework or work experience in policy analysis, energy, environmental management, environmental science, or engineering.
  • Comfortable with writing, spreadsheet analysis, and speaking in public.

Strongly preferred:

  • Experience with, or sound knowledge of, clean energy policies and programs, particularly state-based policies and programs.
  • Experience with energy efficiency and/or environmental policy organizations.
  • Demonstrated passion for clean energy, environmental issues, and social justice.

Preferred start date: on or about May 1, 2022, based in Washington, DC. Currently remote (work from home) with the potential for remaining remote.  Eventually, there will be some travel, perhaps a trip every month or two.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary range is $60,000-95,000. ACEEE’s generous benefits package includes health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance coverage; a 403(b) retirement plan; transportation and bike share benefits; three weeks of vacation in the first year and four weeks thereafter.
