Full-Time Staff Attorney – Oil and Gas

Environmental Integrity Project – Posted by EIP HR Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

Job Description

We are hiring a staff attorney (ideally 2-4 years experience) to work on complex Clean Air Act (CAA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) oil and gas-related legal issues both on the federal level and as part of our team working on state-level, facility-specific, and community-based issues in western Pennsylvania and the surrounding region. Applicants must demonstrate strong writing, legal research, and negotiation skills, and ideally should also possess pollution data research skills (or be willing to become proficient in working with various publicly-available pollution databases). This position involves filing federal deadline suits, unreasonable delay suits, developing and litigating citizen suits and state and federal permit appeals, some grant writing (proposals and reports), as well as interest in working with our Pittsburgh-based grass roots organizer and various coalitions.

Required Qualifications:
•   JD from an accredited law school
•   CAA experience highly preferred; RCRA experience a plus
•   Strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to effectively influence and communicate across all levels of management
•   Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, fast-changing environment
•   Comfort working within ambiguous problem areas, with diverse stakeholders, and collaborating effectively
•   Work in DC area or remotely in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, PA

Required Information to be Submitted with Application:
•   Law school transcripts (unofficial is sufficient) for applicants with less than 3 years of legal work experience
•   Resume
•   Writing sample (no more than 6 pages)
•   Cover letter
•   Phone and email contact for 3 references

This position is for full-time employment with a salary range of $70-85K, depending on years of experience. Benefits include health insurance, 401K eligibility, a competitive nonprofit salary, a generous vacation and sick leave policy, and a friendly, supportive work environment.

The Environmental Integrity Project acts as a watchdog because we have to. State and federal agencies charged with protecting the environment often are squeezed by limited resources and political interference from well-funded lobbyists hired by the industries they are required to regulate. We help level the playing field by giving communities the legal and technical resources they need to claim their rights under environmental laws.
Low-income neighborhoods and communities of color often bear disproportionate health burdens from environmental pollution. The Environmental Integrity Project seeks to serve environmental justice communities by engaging directly with residents, making air and water pollution data more accessible, and reducing pollution through environmental permit reviews and advocacy work.

How to Apply

Interested persons should send their resume with cover letter, a writing sample, law school transcripts (if you have less than 3 years of legal work experience) and contact information for three references to the attention of Mary Greene, EIP Deputy Director, at [email protected]. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Job Categories: Environmental. Job Types: Full-Time. Salaries: 60,000 - 80,000.
