Summary
The Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) seeks a purpose driven, energetic, and creative Sr. Packaging Program Manager who will lead innovative programs to improve and accelerate PSC’s sustainable packaging initiatives. This role will manage our transformative programs including Flex Forward (return to retail packaging program) and the PSC Packaging Pledge (provides tools and resources to companies that commit to recyclable, refillable, or compostable packaging by 2025).  This role will also be managing major stakeholders, industry experts, and collaborative advisory groups to ensure the continual improvement and expansion of PSC’s packaging programming. This is a full-time position that is a hybrid role based near our Boulder, CO headquarters (remote options available) . We operate in a fast-paced start-up environment and this position will play an integral role in cross-functional collaboration with our member services, development, and marketing teams. This position requires the ability to think big and execute, creating solutions that scale across the $100 billion+ pet industry.  

This position requires excellent program management, stakeholder engagement, and technical expertise in multi-laminate flexible packaging, including packaging design and end of life infrastructure. The candidate must be a team player and self-starter who can work cross functionally in a startup environment. 

The Role
The Sr. Packaging Program Manager will work directly with both our internal and external partners supporting our overall goal to be the leading force for sustainable packaging in the pet industry.

Program Management for Flex Forward and the PSC Packaging Pledge (40%)

    • Initiate and execute existing packaging programs to drive action and ensure their success, including project management, impact measurement and reporting, partner management facilitation, and stakeholder relations.
    • Monitor project execution and ensure that the project delivery is to the appropriate levels of quality and in line with its target date, ensuring the overall integrity of the programs
    • Identify partner opportunities, enter agreements with facilities and program partners, follow up to ensure all obligations are met, and lead efforts to quantify impacts.
  • Flex Forward
        • Using return-to-retail pilot data and feasibility analysis, determine expansion opportunities for national and international collections of used pet food and treat bags. 
        • Manage program logistics, measurement and reporting of collections, shipping, and recycling.
        • Provide project management and customer service to participating retailers, brands, and distributors to collect, ship, and recycle pet food bags successfully.
  • PSC Packaging Pledge
      • Develop, execute, maintain, and advance program benefits including technical support, working groups, legislative updates, and a vetted marketplace. 
      • Ensure program systems, tools, documentation and dashboards are up-to-date and best-in-class.
      • Provide program onboarding, consistent engagement, and customer service for all participating companies.
      • Manage signatory documentation including performance benchmarking and annual progress reporting.

Stakeholder Engagement (20%)

  • Lead PSC Packaging collaborative comprised of program partners, funders, and members.
  • Manage all packaging program partners including mechanical and advanced recycling partners, technical consultants, advisory partners, resin providers, packaging producers, etc. 
  • Communicate and present program progress to key decision makers including senior internal leaders, PSC’s advisory board, technical program partners, members, and funders.
  • In partnership with the Director of Partnerships, develop relationships with, provide engagement opportunities for, and foster ongoing communications to ensure current packaging partners and funders are retained and engaged. 
  • Attend, participate, and represent PSC at industry conferences and stakeholder groups to develop leads, establish relationships with potential funding or technical partners, and expand PSC’s sphere of influence. 
  • Solicit speakers for sustainable packaging events, review content, and ensure speaker alignment with PSC’s packaging initiatives. 
  • Support event team to develop compelling speaker outlines including innovative topics, charismatic speakers, and potential vendors. 

Strategy 15%

  • Continually refine, scale, and execute PSC’s packaging strategy and define short and long term vision for packaging solutions across the pet industry.
  • Ensure that PSC’s packaging programs align with global efforts and partners while also customizing solutions for the pet industry’s unique challenges. 
  • Identify gaps in our programs and systems and continually modify programs to ensure optimum sustainable packaging advancements that accelerate the pet industry’s progress toward packaging circularity. 

Member Support (15%)

  • Serve as sustainable packaging expert to PSC’s growing community of business members
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on PSC’s packaging programs, circular systems, tools, end-of life packaging solutions (recycling/composting/landfill) for a variety of packaging formats commonly used in the pet industry. 

Marketing + Sales (10%)

  • Master the supporting business case for PSC’s packaging programming and tell our value creation story appropriately and compellingly to potential supporting audiences including external stakeholders, members, media, and potential funders.
  • Support long term growth strategy for sustainable packaging programming in partnership with the business development team. 
  • Development of thought leadership materials including thoughtful research and programmatic results that cultivate participation and successful fundraising. 
  • In partnership with the development team, develop and execute strategies for growing revenue through strategic connections across the recycling and/or packaged goods industry, and recruit new funding partner opportunities. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in packaging design, packaging manufacturing,  multi-laminate flexible packaging,  or a related field
  • 2-4 years of technical and/or programmatic packaging experience
  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem solving, and the ability to succeed in a fast-paced, technical environment
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills to drive consensus across multiple stakeholders
  • Innovative thinker who excels at collaboration and problem-solving
  • The ability to work independently and deal with an ambiguous environment is a must – the programs we are creating have not ever existed before, and new challenges arise regularly! 
  • Strong analytical thinking skills including the ability to solve problems with a self-directed logical and data approach.
  • Ownership of work is extremely important, and candidates should have a proven record of managing projects and strategic initiatives to their completion.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple concurrent projects while still delivering timely and accurate results
  • Strong relationship skills with a passion for listening and understanding needs and then generating tailored solutions or engagement opportunities
  • Intellectual curiosity, innovative mindset, and commitment to sustainable solutions.

Desired Experience: 

  • Sustainable packaging experience and knowledge, with special emphasis on flexible film packaging.
  • Significant recycling and circular economy industry experience, with an established network of contacts through the packaging industry.  Experience in food and beverage or pet, is strongly desired.
  • Understanding of recycling systems and working with or for stakeholders throughout the supply chain, from material generation to end markets. 
  • Proven consensus-builder with varied stakeholders (business, government, nonprofit).
  • Demonstrated research and technical writing skills
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • Team player with the ability to work independently and adapt to change.
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.

Salary & Benefits

The starting salary for this role is $65,000 – $80,000 and the total range for the Manager level is $65,000 – $84,999 with annual performance bonuses. Our comprehensive benefits package includes employer-paid medical insurance with dental and vision options, a 401k plan with a 4% employer match, an annual wellness stipend of $600, an annual professional development stipend of $1,000, and unlimited PTO. We have a hybrid in-office schedule, with half-day Fridays in the summer. Our office is pet-friendly, too! Relocation reimbursements are available for out-of-state employees looking to relocate to Boulder on a case-by-case basis.
