Full-Time South County Coastkeeper

Reports To: The Director of Advocacy

Position Description: 

The South County Coastkeeper is responsible for leading Save The Bay’s Coastkeeper program, the organization’s on-the-water advocacy and watchdog presence along Rhode Island’s south coast. The Coastkeeper serves as a knowledgeable and credible source on water quality, pollution, coastal ecology, and resource management. This individual responds to environmental threats and emergencies, supports Save The Bay’s broader advocacy efforts, and builds constituencies for the protection, restoration, and science-based management of the Little Narragansett Bay watershed and nearby coastal waters, from Point Judith to Little Narragansett Bay.

Reports To: The Director of Advocacy

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead STB’s advocacy initiatives on climate change, water pollution, and public access in the South Coast region.
  • Support STB’s broader advocacy initiatives, including legal, legislative, regulatory, and public communications.
  • Maintain a visible presence, both on the water and in local watersheds, to identify and investigate pollution sources, conduct and support monitoring efforts, identify and address problems that affect water quality and the health of the local waters,
  • Work with state and federal agencies to address pollution problems, use conflicts, and emergency response.
  • Engage with coastal users and stakeholders to address priority issues and build constituencies needed to achieve goals
  • Represent STB before media and stakeholder groups, including local, state and federal agencies and officials.
  • Develop and manage the Coastkeeper program, including the South Coast Center in Westerly, budget and annual plans.
  • Participate in and support the activities of the Waterkeeper Alliance. (The South County Coastkeeper is a licensed program of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a network of more than 300 similar organizations worldwide.)

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Review and comment on coastal development proposals.
  • Work with academic institutions on bay and coastal science and research.
  • Support fundraising and donor cultivation activities.
  • Be a resource to STB’s Program & Policy Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with and support STB’s communications department on communication goals and strategies, including responding to information requests.
  • Collaborate with STB’s environmental education programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of ecosystem-based estuaries and coastal habitats.
  • Experience working on estuary, coastal or ocean-related issues.
  • A strong working knowledge of the South County region and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of people and groups.
  • Strong commitment to coastal environmental protection and restoration.
  • Ability to both operate and navigate a power boat safely, and to trailer and launch power boats/canoes and kayaks.
  • Four-year college degree in environmental studies, marine science, or related fields is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Energetic, creative, outgoing, engaging, passionate, and self-directed.
  • Ability to perform duties well under the pressure.
  • Bilingual a plus.

Salary and Benefits: The South County Coastkeeper is full-time salaried position with flexible hours (although evening and weekend hours will be required from time to time), competitive pay, and a comprehensive benefits package. Save The Bay is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
