Job Description

FisheryProgress, a program of FishChoice, is the global platform for tracking progress of Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) and has the vast majority of global FIPs actively using it as their vehicle for public reporting and accountability. In 2021, FisheryProgress launched a Human Rights and Social Responsibility Policy in order to begin building social improvement into the FIP model and establishing new norms around transparency of social challenges and progress. We are beginning our second year of implementing this policy, and it is already abundantly clear that FisheryProgress has a critical and influential role to play in calling attention to major social issues in fisheries and supporting and recognizing improvement. The Social Responsibility Manager will join the team at a critical point in the program’s trajectory, allowing them to play a significant role in shaping the movement to strengthen fisher empowerment and reduce the risks of supply chain exploitation.

We are seeking a lead for this program of work at FishChoice that brings deep expertise in human rights and social responsibility and the ability to operationalize a balanced, incremental and flexible approach to integrating social responsibility into FIPs. We are focused on pragmatic and creative solutions to help FIPs and industry adopt this new area of work.

Role:

  • Lead the implementation of the social responsibility policy, in line with FisheryProgress’ overarching programmatic strategy and workplan.
  • Lead development and management of relationships with partners and stakeholders related to social responsibility, including engaging with FIP leads and the environmental and human rights NGO community to build support and awareness of the policy, as well regular engagement with FisheryProgress Advisory Committees.
  • Support ongoing outreach to seafood businesses to build understanding of social responsibility and due diligence, and encourage their engagement and support for FIPs.
  • Lead the effort to aggregate and track feedback on the policy and log potential revisions to consider in the future.
  • Lead FishChoice’s participation in a new monitoring and evaluation effort to the implementation and impact of the policy.
  • Lead the stakeholder consultation processes and technical writing needed to maintain and update the social policy and associated materials (templates, guidelines etc) in the planned 2024-2025 policy revision.
  • Support the continued development of a capacity-building program and other external partnerships to support FIPs’ ability to implement the policy requirements.
  • Support the review process of all social data submitted by FIPs to ensure that it is reviewed in an accurate and timely way, and build the capacity of FishChoice’s staff to review social data.
  • Participate in the project team that is conducting a full rebuild of FisheryProgress.org including integration of social responsibility reporting with environmental reporting on the website. This role includes collating new requirements, testing and providing feedback on new features.
  • Support the development of relationships with social responsibility funders, and contribute to the development of and reporting on grant proposals related to social responsibility. Collaborate with others at FishChoice to explore how to integrate social responsibility into the overall organization, and specifically into FishChoice.com, another core program run by the organization.
  • Lead the handling of the formal appeals process related to social data.
  • Manage at least one and up to three staff members and a range of consultants.
