Friends of the Earth’s oceans and vessels program works at the regional, national and international level to initiate a sea change in the manner in which shipping and other ocean polluters and their pollution streams are regulated. We work to protect coastal communities and marine life from harmful vessel air pollution, greenhouse gases, and the sewage, oil, and other water pollutants discharged from cruise ships, cargo ships, oil tankers, and other industrial operations.

A proven communicator with a passion for environmental, social and racial justice to support the campaign to stop petrochemical facilities and help create a fossil free future. Are you a person who can both engage and put pressure on corporations, financiers, Congress and the Biden Administration for an end to plastics build-out along with working alongside fenceline communities to prevent the next massive petrochemical complex from being built?

If so, this is the position for you. We want you to succeed and we want to pay you a competitive wage that is in line with your experience. The salary range for this full-time remote role is $71,000-$79,000.Offers are determined based on relevant skills and experience required for the position.

What the Role Needs:

Dynamic Campaigner: Play a valuable role in the petrochemical advocacy coalitions by helping develop and implement coalition-wide financial strategies to curb petrochemicals projects, including both direct engagement with, and public pressure on, financiers. Develop, lead, and implement FOE’s strategic campaign plans with both internal and external stakeholders.

Community Champion: Support and build the power of local communities impacted by existing and proposed petrochemicals facilities by providing/expanding their capacity, advancing their demands and amplifying their voices. Facilitate fence line community access to and engagement with federal policymakers. Conduct direct and grassroots advocacy towards Members of Congress and agency officials in coordination with the Political Department. Represent Friends of the Earth before policymakers, in media interviews and at public events to support campaign objectives.

Team Player: Partner with FoE consultants, and Membership department to mobilize our base in support of policies and actions to curb the expansion of the petrochemicals sector and address the problem of plastic pollution and waste. Assist the Oceans and Vessels Program Director and Development department to support foundation and other donor fundraising responsibilities.

Strategic Communicator: Conduct skilled research and analysis as needed to develop letters, reports and articles, factsheets, web content and other campaign materials on the petrochemical build out, particularly petrochemical financing, to support coalitions and allies; and persuade opinion leaders, financiers, policymakers, the press and the public.

Required Qualifications:  

  • A minimum of five years of experience in policy advocacy, corporate/market campaigns, organizing or legislative work.
  • Proven communication skills and demonstrated comfort working with a wide range of constituencies, including community organizations/environmental justice groups, financiers, the public, the press, and government officials.
  • Ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including policy analysis, advocacy, organizing, public speaking, research, and communications.
  • Advocacy experience preferably in the realm of environmental, finance, and/or energy and climate change.
  • All candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. FoE does not sponsor any employment related visas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of legislative and executive branch processes and strategic approach to both policy and politics preferred.
  • Collaboratively engage as part of a fast-moving and results-oriented team and work effectively in a changing environment.
  • Strong research and written communication skills.
  • Excellent decision-making and networking skills.
  • Fundraising experience including writing and securing foundation grants.
  • Occasional travel. (Once Covid restrictions are lifted)
