Job Description

Job Title: Senior Energy Campaigns Analyst
Department: Program Department
Location: Remote; East coast preferred
Reports To: Director of Research, Strategy and Analysis
Supervises: N/A

Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it.

Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees.
Scope: The Energy Campaigns Analyst is an integral part of a team working across Sierra Club’s campaigns to transform the U.S. energy sector off fossil fuels and towards an equitable clean energy future.  They will be responsible for providing strategic research and analysis to strengthen our advocacy in two primary areas: 1) light and heavy-duty vehicle electrification, and 2) liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities.  They will work with the Director of Research, Strategy and Analysis to determine if these campaigns are on track to meet goals and disseminate findings both internally and externally.  They will work closely with the Sierra Club’s Analyst Team to develop cross-cutting research across sectors to determine vulnerabilities in the fossil fuel industry.  They will work on environmental justice data to help inform the campaigns of policies or facilities that disproportionately burden people of color and low-income communities.  This work will be done in alignment with Sierra Club’s values and requires highly advanced emotional, relational and equity skills and practice.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical expertise and analytical support on clean transportation.  Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign is focused on accelerating a widespread shift to electric vehicles; advocating for bold federal and state car, truck and bus regulations; and securing landmark policies that provide everyone access to clean transportation solutions.  The Energy Campaigns Analyst will design and carry out research and analysis to assess strategic priorities for our advocacy; provide technical expertise on draft regulations and regulatory authority opportunities; represent the Campaign in coalition meetings and weigh-in on modeling assumptions from EPA and our partners; analyze emissions and health impacts; support campaign leadership with review of industry trends, news and studies.
  • Provide research and analysis on LNG project proposals.  In order to avert the worst impacts of the climate crisis, we must ensure that we slow or stop the expansion of fossil fuel production at the same time as we are bringing down emissions.  Sierra Club’s Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign is driving externalized costs into the production of gas, stopping new bulk gas pipelines and related infrastructure, and blocking the expansion of LNG export facilities.  At the same time, we leverage these fights to galvanize a vibrant, diverse climate justice movement, powerful enough to erode the social license of all fossil fuels.  The Energy Campaigns Analyst will design and carry out research and analysis to assess strategic priorities for our advocacy; assess economic vulnerabilities in LNG proposals; analyze operations and emissions of existing LNG facilities; expand our understanding of connections between proposed LNG facilities and pipelines; research connections to LNG financing and connections to our international work; provide insights on LNG policy mechanisms and the interplay with oil & gas markets and regulations; support campaign leadership with review of industry trends, news and studies.
  • Assist with fundraising.  In cooperation with fundraising staff, assist in the development of fundraising proposals and participate in grant making, solicitation efforts and reports to donors.
  • Collaborate with the Analyst Team to foster data-informed campaigns.  Support Director with workshops and presentations to facilitate content knowledge of energy sector and campaign outcomes; work with Analyst Team to provide original research and other analysis in support of campaign decarbonization efforts.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

  • Energy policy expertise.  Position requires interest in and aptitude for understanding public policy aspects of transportation, oil & gas, and related climate and energy issues and the role of technical analyses and advocacy in shaping public opinion and policy debates

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.  Comfort with public speaking.  Skill at packaging and explaining complex concepts to a wide range of audiences through clear written materials.
  • Ability to work independently and with teams.
  • Detail oriented and deadline driven.
  • Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:

  • Experience working on economics of oil & gas industry
