Full-Time Senior Attorney (DC / Pittsburgh / Philadelphia)

Environmental Integrity Project – Posted by EIP HR Washington, District of Columbia, United States

Job Description

The Environmental Integrity Project is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that empowers communities and protects public health and the environment by investigating polluters, holding them accountable under the law, and strengthening public policy. Comprised of former EPA enforcement attorneys, public interest lawyers, analysts, investigators, and community organizers, EIP has three goals:

  1. To illustrate through objective facts and figures how the failure to enforce or implement environmental laws increases pollution and harms public health;
  2. To hold federal and state agencies, as well as individual corporations, accountable for failing to enforce or comply with environmental laws; and
  3. To help local communities obtain the protections of environmental laws.

We are hiring a senior attorney (ideally 8+ years’ experience) to work on complex Clean Air Act and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act oil and gas-related legal issues both on the federal level and as part of our team working on state-level, facility-specific, and community-based issues in western Pennsylvania and the surrounding region. Applicants must demonstrate strong writing, legal research, and negotiation skills, and should also possess pollution data research skills (or be willing to become proficient in working with various publicly-available pollution databases). This position involves filing federal deadline suits, unreasonable delay suits, developing and litigating citizen suits and state and federal permit appeals, some grant writing (proposals and reports), as well as interest in working with our Pittsburgh-based grass roots organizer and various coalitions. The selected senior attorney can expect to meet occasionally with community members, as well as local, state, and federal officials.

The Environmental Integrity Project acts as a watchdog because we have to. State and federal agencies charged with protecting the environment often are squeezed by limited resources and political interference from well-funded lobbyists hired by the industries they are required to regulate. We help level the playing field by giving communities the legal and technical resources they need to claim their rights under environmental laws.

Low-income neighborhoods and communities of color often bear disproportionate health burdens from environmental pollution. The Environmental Integrity Project seeks to serve environmental justice communities by engaging directly with residents, making air and water pollution data more accessible, and reducing pollution through environmental permit reviews and advocacy work.

Supporting environmental and racial justice, we strive to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace, rooted in openness and collaboration. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer committed to providing employment regardless of sex, race, creed, color, gender, religion, marital status, age, or disability. EIP offers an excellent benefits package and is a family-friendly place to work. Salary commensurate with experience. Come join us!
