Position

The Senior Accountant will manage or support all financial accounting and reporting activities, such as cash management, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis. This is a very hands-on position reporting and you will play a role in influencing and shaping the organization’s strategy, policies, and internal controls. You will report to Pacific Environment’s Director of Finance & Oprations.

Location and Travel

Pacific Environment staff currently work from home. Greater San Francisco Bay Area local applicants and California residents are strongly preferred, followed by candidates in other U.S. West Coast states, plus Anchorage, Alaska. However, we will consider highly qualified candidates residing elsewhere in the U.S. This position requires working West Coast Time Zone hours, and potentially some evenings or weekends. Some travel to the Bay Area may be required if the successful candidate is based outside the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The position may also involve some other travel.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, accounting, and reporting systems to ensure compliance with US GAAP and nonprofit regulatory requirements.
  • Process financial data and present financial statements and reports accurately and timely; monitor and report account control issues.
  • Manage the work of the Finance & Operations Associate who will assist with basic accounting functions such as AP, AR, petty cash, bank reconciliations, etc.
  • Assist in the planning process of the annual audit and organizational budget; administer and review all financial plans and compare actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Support the Executive Director in preparing for the Board’s Finance Committee meetings and participate in these meetings.
  • Manage daily cash management needs and create organizational cash flow forecasts Assist wherever possible in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization.
  • Manage other tasks as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years accounting experience, with at least 2-3 years at nonprofits.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP.
  • Experience in audit and/or implementing internal controls processes.
  • Proficient with QuickBooks Online and software packages such as Microsoft Office – especially Excel.
  • Proficient with NetSuite, Intacct, Bill, Expensify, and Ramp is a plus.
  • Experience with setting up and running accounting systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully interact at all levels of the organization and develop positive relationships with all staff members.
  • Ability to present finance related items to board and executive leadership and other staff.

Compensation and Benefits

Pacific Environment provides compensation commensurate with experience and equitable with others on our team, plus a full benefits package for staff positions. The salary range for this position is $84,000-$96,000, which is carefully considered to account for equity, and the final offer will be based on candidate’s qualifications. The employee will enjoy a flexible working environment with a dedicated, diverse group of colleagues.

Physical Requirements

The Senior Accountant’s work involves remaining in a stationary position and looking at a computer for long stretches of time, communicating with co-workers electronically, and occasional travel (including overnight travel), in-person meetings, or events. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
