Audubon Canyon Ranch (ACR) seeks a Resource Ecologist for our Martin Griffin Preserve. S/he is a member of the ACR stewardship and science team and reports to the Martin Griffin Preserve Resident Biologist. The Resource Ecologist provides leadership in natural resources inventory, monitoring, management, and restoration programs at MGP;  recruits, trains and supervises stewardship volunteers; reports on regular field reconnaissance, including early detection and monitoring of stewardship issues; leads or contributes to the preparation of technical reports and publications; works collaboratively with ACR’s science and stewardship council; and participates in community-based forums regarding land use issues and builds on the potential for collaborations with neighboring land owners and land use agencies. The Resource Ecologist constructs and monitors budgets; may supervise and assist in hiring season staff or interns; and assists in fundraising efforts.

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree and professional experience or advanced training/degree in conservation biology, natural resource management, resource ecology, or related field.  S/he can work independently and efficiently plan, implement, and manage complex natural resource management projects including preparing budgets and tracking expenses. The candidate should display proficiency at managing invasive species, implementing ecological restoration using best management practices, and successfully engaging, coordinating, and motivating volunteers, partners, and the public.

Job Description:

The Martin Griffin Preserve Resource Ecologist leads the implementation of restoration and resource management projects at MGP.  This position has primary responsibility for supervising, organizing, and motivating volunteers on resource management activities, including revitalizing the regular MGP Stewards group.  The Resource Ecologist works with the MGP Resident Biologist, MGP Preserve Manager, MGP Land Steward, ACR Prescribed Fire Specialist and other staff to identify resource management needs.  The Resource Ecologist works with the Resident Biologist to identify new restoration and resource projects and helps identify possible funding sources for these and other projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership in natural resources inventory, monitoring, management, and restoration programs at MGP
  • Leads natural resources stewardship projects involving ACR Land Stewards, volunteers, laborers, and paid crews;
  • Recruits, trains and supervises MGP Stewards (volunteer group) and serves as the staff liaison between the MGP Stewards, the Martin Griffin Preserve Manager, Land Steward, and Resident Biologist
  • Communicates with MGP Preserve Biologist and other staff [Stewardship and Science Council?] on project implementation issues, provides updates on the progress of active projects, and reports on regular field reconnaissance, including early detection and monitoring of stewardship issues
  • Leads or contributes to the preparation of technical reports and publications in stewardship
  • Collaborates on stewardship and monitoring projects at other ACR preserves.
  • Participates in community-based forums regarding land use issues and builds on the potential for collaborations with neighboring land owners and land use agencies
  • May supervise and assist in hiring seasonal staff or interns
  • Assists ACR development staff and MGP Resident Biologist with fundraising efforts related to stewardship
  • Maintains tools and equipment, and obtains tools and field materials as required

Develops and manages special projects or performs other tasks as assigned, including research projects on topics in restoration ecology and natural areas management, as well as logistics and communications with visiting researchers.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and professional experience or advanced training/degree in conservation biology, natural resource management, resource ecology, or related field
  • Ability to independently and efficiently plan, implement, and manage complex natural resource management projects including preparing budgets and tracking expenses
  • Proficiency at managing invasive species, maintaining trails, and implementing ecological restoration using various techniques and best management practices
  • Familiarity with the native and non-native biota of California, particularly Bay Area counties
  • Proven record of success engaging, coordinating, and motivating volunteers, partners, and the public
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, and show appropriate levels of problem solving
  • Ability to develop a positive relationship with diverse staff, volunteers, and partners
  • Ability to provide training and oversight to ensure safety and security of field crews
  • Strong written, organizational, and reporting skills
  • Experience using GPS units and maps, navigating off-trail safely, working safely sometime alone
  • Computer literacy, including use of Microsoft Office, knowledge of, or willingness to learn, ArcGIS or alternative on-line mapping and inventory techniques
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently at repetitive tasks under often inhospitable field conditions

Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to conduct research and communicate information regarding: water resources; short-term and long-term climate assessments; impacts of large storm events; risk assessments
  • Experience with and understanding of fire ecology
