RESOURCE CONSERVATION CLIMATE SPECIALIST I/II

$32.67-$44.94/Hour

The County’s Office of Sustainability is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Resource Conservation Climate Specialist I/II to serve on the Climate Change/Adaptation work group. We want “sustainability champions” to empower our employees and our community members to embrace sustainability more fully and use resources more efficiently.

As part of our team, the Resource Conservation Climate Specialist I/II is focused on sea level rise and climate resilience, stakeholder and community engagement, and climate change mitigation, including assisting with development and implementation of the County’s Climate Action Plans. The Resource Conservation Climate Specialist I/II will effectively engage community members in sustainability efforts and initiatives, build partnerships and collaborate with County and city officials, government staff, and community stakeholders to achieve measurable progress toward the County’s climate and sustainability goals. He/she will ensure programs and projects are equitable and accessible to all community members.

The responsibilities for this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Playing a leading role in facilitating a stakeholder engagement process for countywide climate change preparedness efforts
  • Assisting with the development of a planning and policy toolkit for sea level rise
  • Assisting with Climate Action Plan development and emissions reductions efforts for the unincorporated County and government operations
  • Conducting meaningful community engagement activities to raise awareness about climate change mitigation and preparedness efforts
  • Providing support to the Green Business Program
  • Assisting with coordination and collaboration across climate mitigation and climate adaptation efforts
  • Assisting and lead other climate change initiatives, as needed
  • Sharing ideas on ways to increase resilience
  • Integrating race and social justice considerations into all work duties
  • Being a collaborative team-player, and working with cities and stakeholders

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong interest in sustainability and environmental issues
  • Extensive knowledge, experience, and expertise in a broad range of sustainability topics
  • Experience in the field and a college degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Policy, Environmental Science or a related field
  • Experience completing greenhouse gas emissions inventories, developing Climate Action Plans, and tracking progress on plans is preferred
  • Experience organizing community events and educational programs, or facilitating or managing public processes or projects with an active, highly engaged community
  • Strong interpersonal relations – a natural marketer that easily connects with people
  • Clear communication – both verbally and in writing
  • Strong analytical skills – experienced in conducting research and analyzing data
  • Independence – can “hit the ground running” and work with minimal supervision
  • Flexibility – able to change course quickly and effectively
  • A desire to learn more about a career in local government
  • GIS skills

A typical way to qualify is one year of experience in the field of resource conservation which has included program analysis and coordination.
