Part-Time Residential Outreach Specialist (Oakland)

Job Description

Ecology Action is seeking 12 Outreach Specialists to join our residential water conservation efforts. Preference given to bilingual candidates (Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese or other commonly spoken language desired). Three different schedule options are available:

A) 25 hours per week positions (April-August 2018)

  • Anticipated Schedule: Tuesday Friday 3-7:30pm and Saturday 10am-6pm     

B) 11.5 hours per week positions (April-May); moving to 25 hours per week (June-August 2018)

  • Anticipated Schedule: 11.5 hours per week: Friday 3-7:30pm and Saturday 10am-6pm (April-May 2018)
  • Anticipated Schedule: 25 hours per week: Tuesday-Friday, 3-7:30pm and Saturday 10am-6pm (June-August 2018)

C) 25 hours per week positions (May-Aug. 2018)

  • Anticipated Schedule: Tuesday Friday 3-7:30pm and Saturday 10am-6pm

All positions are subject to continued program funding and are currently scheduled to run from April through August 2018.

Residential Outreach Specialists will be responsible for conducting door-to-door outreach and for installing water-saving equipment for the WaterLink residential outreach program in the San Francisco Bay Area (certain neighborhoods in Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward, Daly City, East Palo Alto, and San Francisco), funded by the California Department of Water Resources.

Major Job Duties

  • Knock on doors in designated neighborhoods to find residents interested in receiving free water/energy upgrades.
  • Install water-saving equipment in kitchens and bathrooms.

Specific responsibilities

  • In teams of two, find residents willing to participate in the program by knocking on doors, talking to residents about the program, and dropping off informational flyers.
  • Once invited into a home, check baseline flow of sinks and shower heads. Install low-flow faucet aerators and shower heads for qualifying fixtures.
  • Collect data during the home visit on a mobile device.
  • Assess eligibility for single-family and multi-family customers to be a recipient of high-efficiency clothes washers. Provide referrals to Installation Manager.
  • Inform residents about ways to save water and energy in their homes and refer them to other rebates and direct installation programs for which they may be eligible.
  • Follow safety protocols and high standards of professionalism.
  • Table at events and community locations on occasion.

Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Availability to work early evenings and all-day Saturday, as the project must connect with residents when they are home
  • Willing and able to learn how to use tools to install showerheads and aerators
  • Ability to learn and use apps on a mobile device
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office programs, email, and scheduling tools
  • Excellent oral communication and problem-solving skills
  • Highly detail oriented with a critical degree of accuracy regarding data entry
  • Results-oriented

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to speak Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese or other commonly spoken language in our service area
  • Familiarity with neighborhood, community service groups, and leaders in the service area
  • Basic understanding of, or interest in, learning about water efficiency and/or energy efficiency measures and technologies for homes
  • Experience working in sales
  • Experience working with environmental public education
  • Experience working with community organizing
  • Comfort with database programs such as Salesforce
  • Valid California Class C Driver’s license, a reliable personal vehicle available to haul equipment and meet potential participants at their home and/or contractors at their place of business (mileage reimbursement provided), and current automobile insurance

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will walk outdoors through neighborhoods for a significant portion of the work day, five days a week. The employee will regularly be required to sit, stand, walk up to 1/2 mile per day, walk up and down stairs, talk and hear, and use a tablet computer. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment: Generally, the work environment is in under-resourced residential neighborhoods and homes.

Compensation: Ecology Action offers a competitive hourly rate ranging from $17.00 $18.69 per hour (depending on experience), plus the potential for individual and team financial performance incentives.  This position is not eligible for benefits, except as required by law (including paid time off that is accrued based on hours worked).  Driving an insured personal vehicle on company business is required, and mileage reimbursement is provided at the Federal rate.
