Full-Time Research Assistant – Arctic Boreal Flux Synthesis and Upscaling
Woodwell Climate Research Center (Woodwell) conducts science for solutions at the nexus of climate, people, and nature. We partner with leaders and communities for just meaningful impact to address the climate crisis.
We seek a Research Assistant to work on a project related to the impact of climate change and permafrost thaw on carbon emissions. The selected candidate will compile and synthesize ecosystem CO2 and CH4 flux measurements and related geospatial data products for use in a publicly accessible database and model development in Arctic-Boreal regions. This position requires the ability to process and analyze both site-level and large spatiotemporal datasets using programming languages such as R, Python, and Google Earth Engine. Prior methodological knowledge of GIS and remote sensing approaches are required, and experience with the eddy covariance flux technique is preferred. The selected candidate will work within a highly collaborative team of Arctic modelers, scientists, policy experts, and communications specialists for the Permafrost Pathways project.
- Compile CO2 and CH4 flux measurements from the Arctic-Boreal terrestrial and aquatic environments into a coherent database.
- Collaborate with a network of Arctic researchers to update and edit the database.
- Process and compile existing geospatial data products (e.g., remotely sensed MODIS data, climate data).
- Schedule own work and lead data compilation.
- Contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and manuscript preparation.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- M.S. in earth system sciences, geography, environmental sciences, micrometeorology or a related discipline.
- Experience manipulating large data sets.
- Experience processing geospatial data is required, and flux data processing is preferred.
- Good computational and programming skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative environment.

Fixed-term: Two years
Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position, the annual salary range is $55,000 – $65,000 dependent on qualifications/experience. Woodwell offers a generous benefits package and work life balance.
Location: Falmouth, Massachusetts (remote work location is feasible).
