Full-Time Policy Advisor

Job Description

General Overview:  The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit organization founded by former US Vice President Al Gore, is dedicated to leading a global movement demanding immediate action on the climate crisis by using cutting-edge communications and grassroots strategies to educate the public about the urgency and solvability of the climate crisis and to activate the public to support actions that address the climate crisis.

Position Overview: The Policy Advisor’s primary duty is tracking and researching existing and proposed climate and energy-related policy, and recommending, and providing strategic advice and guidance on overall climate policy at the international, federal, state, and local levels. This policy advice may affect Climate Reality’s strategic direction for domestic campaigns and its volunteer and membership network devote attention and resources to.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advising on and assisting in developing domestic campaigns, including briefing relevant staff on climate policy and political developments and recommending domestic advocacy and communications opportunities.
  • Advising on and assisting in developing Climate Reality’s federal policy strategy and campaign, including developing materials as necessary.
  • Researching climate and energy-related issues, with a focus on national, local, and state-based issues to support Climate Reality’s Chapter model. Understanding the political landscape at the federal level is a plus.
  • Staying abreast of movements and campaigns in the broader environmental community and identifying opportunities for collaboration, including signing on to multi-organizational letters and other initiatives.
  • Reviewing, vetting, editing and developing support materials and communications for programs and campaigns. This might include writing plain-language text for social media platforms or other external communications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least one to two years of professional experience focused on policy related to climate science, environmental science, energy technology or a relevant field strongly preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a passion for accuracy.
  • Strong written and oral skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to accommodate irregular and sometimes long work hours.
