OREGON COASTAL ORGANIZER

Part-Time/Temporary Assignment

Hours: Average of 15 Hours/week

*Ranging from 10-25 hours/week, not to exceed 25 hours/week and not to exceed 480 hours in total for the duration of the assignment.

Assignment Term Length: December 1, 2020 – June 20th, 2021

*6 months, some flexibility with commencement and completion dates.

Rate: $28-$30/Hour

Location: Remote

*Strongly prefer a candidate based in Oregon.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Surfrider Foundation is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. We are currently seeking a highly motivated individual for a 6 month, temporary assignment term for the position of Oregon Coastal Organizer. The ideal candidate must have a background in direct action organizing and grassroots outreach. The main objective for this position is to increase the organizational capacity of our Oregon chapter network through training and coaching volunteers on engaging in public process.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate Chapter participation in local and statewide campaigns in Oregon.
  • Facilitate and train chapter volunteers in direct action organizing techniques including, but not limited to; campaign planning, recruitment, retention, strategy, tactics and program implementation.
  • Represent Surfrider Foundation at state and local hearings when necessary.
  • Assist in growing statewide membership.
  • Administrative Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; writing newsletter articles, supporting web content development, social media outreach and grant reporting.
  • Miscellaneous projects and assignments as needed.

Reports to: Oregon Field Manager

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience participating in public process in Oregon (i.e. actively worked on getting a local ordinance or State bill passed).
  • Experience in direct action grassroots organizing, community outreach and civic engagement.
  • Experience using WordPress, Mailchimp, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Knowledge of state, regional and national coastal & ocean environmental issues.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing with elected officials, agency staff, industry representatives and ocean stakeholders.
  • Experience in speaking publicly in front of a large number of people in diverse situations.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (including some weekends and evenings).
  • Ability to work effectively from a remote home office.
  • Ability to be highly organized with strong follow through.
  • Ability to work independently.

Preferred: 

  • Educational concentration in environmental or marine science and/or related field is extremely beneficial.
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills
  • Experience in speaking publicly in front of a large number of people in diverse situations.
  • Bilingual in Spanish
