The Smart Surfaces Coalition (SSC) is a fast-growing nonprofit organization made up of 40+ leading national and international organizations from a wide range of industries including urban sustainability, public health, and environmental justice. The coalition supports the rapid adoption of Smart Surfaces — a term referring to the citywide, integrated deployment of reflective, porous, and green surfaces, solar PV, and urban trees — in cities in the US and globally. This is one of the largest, least deployed, and most cost-effective climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and is central to addressing urban environmental justice issues. SSC seeks a passionate and enthusiastic individual with 1–4 years of directly relevant, substantial experience to serve as Media Coordinator/Executive Assistant.

The Media Coordinator/Executive Assistant will regularly interface with leading experts and policymakers; develop and execute communications strategies in coordination with SSC’s media firm; and provide administrative support to SSC’s CEO and founder, Greg Kats. The ideal candidate is a highly organized self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Location: Hybrid remote, candidates located in/near or willing to relocate to Washington DC area preferred

Position: Full-time

Job Description

Responsibilities will include the following:

Media & Communications Coordinator (75%)  

  • Play a central role in coordinating and shaping the media work of SSC’s media firm, B|E Strategy
  • Contribute to the execution of communications strategies through journalist outreach, website development, social media management, and the creation of internal and external communications materials including slide decks, one-pagers, reports, and visual assets
  • Coordinate and collaborate with SSC partners, city leaders, and other stakeholders on projects that communicate work focused on implementing and quantifying the impacts of Smart Surfaces in cities in the US and globally
  • Track and promote relevant news stories in climate, energy, public health, and environmental justice
  • Support research and analysis, with the SSC team, in areas such as health, environmental justice, climate change, and urban policy
  • Supervise work conducted by interns and scholars

Executive Assistant (25%)  

  • Assist CEO with scheduling meetings, managing video conferences, and other administrative tasks as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to addressing climate change and other environmental challenges
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Media/Communications, Energy/Climate Science, Environmental Studies, Public Policy, or other relevant field
  • 1–4 years of work experience
  • Excellent writing, communication, research, and editing skills
  • Significant writing and media experience in both traditional and digital platforms
  • Strong technical literacy, with proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe, Google Drive, Asana, Zoom, and Zotero
  • Ability to multitask, work independently, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with executive professionals and to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Basic graphic design experience preferred
  • Highly organized, with strong attention to detail and time management skills

Plus Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in related field
  • Experience developing ArcGIS StoryMaps
  • Experience working on the Hill / public policy
  • Experience working in public health

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary range $55,000 to $60,000 commensurate with experience
  • Medical + Dental coverage
  • 3 weeks PTO, in addition to all federal holidays
