The Smart Surfaces Coalition (SSC) supports the rapid adoption of Smart Surfaces—a term referring to the integrated deployment of reflective, porous, and green surfaces, solar PV, and urban trees city-wide—in cities in the US and globally. SSC has built this into the most effective urban cooling and resilience projects, engaging a dozen cities and 35 million people. This is one of the largest, least deployed, and most cost-effective climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and is central to addressing urban environmental justice issues. SSC seeks passionate and enthusiastic individuals with relevant experience to serve as the Media/Communications Intern.

Title: Media/Communications Summer Intern

Location: Preference for DC-based, working 3 days per week in SSC’s Office located in Dupont Circle

Position: Full-time summer internship, 40 hours/week

Duration: 16-48 weeks; transitions to part-time (10-20 hours/week) for fall and spring semesters

Start Date: Summer (June-August)

Compensation: $3,200 / month for full-time summer internship. Compensation will be reduced during the part-time fall and spring semester period and finalized based on the agreed-upon schedule and hours.

Duties/Tasks

  • Social media planning and content creation – come up with a weekly social media strategy for SSC LinkedIn and Twitter (X) accounts
  • Help coordinate, write, and create graphics and content for the SSC Weekly Newsletter
  • Support general research for SSC team members and projects
  • Participate in meetings and phone calls as related to media/communications

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Geography, Public Health, or a related field. Minimum of 3.5 GPA, with substantial course work and work experience in relevant disciplines.
  • Demonstrated passion for climate change mitigation and adaptation, urban transformation, or similar directly relevant subject
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, effective time management, and the ability to work and learn independently or with a team
  • Ability to write about and explain complex concepts in simple, concrete terms
  • Highly motivated individual interested in working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment willing to be creative and take initiative

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing social media content with a consistent message/brand
  • Graphic design experience with Adobe Illustrator or Canva
  • Copywriting and editing expertise

The Media/Communications Intern will work with SSC Staff and a leading media firm to develop media strategies for different SSC projects, involving coordinating media outreach and managing social media strategy and engagement.
