MAIN PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE OF POSITION

The American Cleaning Institute’s (ACI) Sustainability Program leads industry-wide sustainability initiatives, education, and outreach programs. The position collaborates with all ACI’s departments, e.g., Government Affairs; Communications and Outreach; and Research, Technology and Regulation. The incumbent assists the Senior Director of Sustainability in the furtherance of ACI’s sustainability program’s objectives.

The incumbent will engage with ACI member companies to promote and grow sustainability initiatives and will utilize their knowledge of the cleaning product industry and sustainability to increase engagement in programs of importance to the cleaning product supply chain. Interaction with external stakeholders as well as ACI members is a critical function of the position. The incumbent acts as a conduit of information and intelligence among member companies, regulatory bodies, and sustainability partners to ensure overall alignment and relationship management digitally and in person.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science (or related field), plus minimum 4 years’ experience in sustainability OR Master’s degree in sustainability (or related field) plus 2 years’ experience in sustainability.
• Knowledge of corporate sustainability strategies, practices, and certifications.
• Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills relevant to sustainability communications.
• Ability to work within a team environment as well as independently with a willingness to learn.
• Must be detail-oriented, well-organized and exhibit good judgement.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.
• Ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including non-scientific audiences.
• Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work with Senior Director, Sustainability to engage member companies regarding ongoing sustainability initiatives.
• Work with communications team on consumer outreach regarding safety and sustainability practices for cleaning products.
• Build consumer education strategies in key sustainability areas including recycling and cold water washing.
• Develop webinars and other educational activities to encourage participation in sustainability initiatives.
• Engage members to build a library of case studies on sustainability practices in the cleaning products industry.
• Assist in the development of a bi-annual sustainability report.
• Evaluate applications and provide feedback to initiatives and award submissions.
• Data collection and benchmarking on industry priorities.
• Assist in ongoing needs of committees and work groups.
• Manage project timelines with committees, work groups, and contractors.
• Develop engagement and outreach strategies for relevant NGOs.
• Participate in inter-industry coalitions on issues, as directed.
• Represent ACI at meetings and conferences as directed.
• Respond or assist in providing responses to member inquiries on sustainability issues.
• Other duties as assigned.
