Save The Bay’s mission is to protect and restore the Bay for people and wildlife. We are the only regional organization that integrates political advocacy, wetland restoration, and education to shape a healthy and resilient region. Over 25 years, Save The Bay has become a Bay Area leader in the science and practice of habitat restoration, focused on tidal marsh transition zone habitat at landscape-scale for recovery of endangered species, and for ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change. We enlist thousands of volunteers annually to restore the shoreline and educate Bay Area students to be the next generation of Bay stewards through hands-on experiential education and on-line learning.

Position Summary

The Individual Giving Officer plays a key role in advancing Save The Bay’s donor engagement and communications efforts. This position focuses on managing donor segments such as sustainers and new donors, managing and executing events, and supporting donor communications. The Individual Giving Officer leads projects to support the Director of Individual Giving and other team members in executing strategic fundraising initiatives.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to donor engagement strategies by drafting compelling donor asks and communications, coordinating with internal teams to ensure alignment, and helping grow the organization’s individual giving program. The Individual Giving Officer also manages donor research tools and data to support decision-making and ensure targeted, meaningful outreach.

REPORTS TO: Director of Individual Giving

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Donor Fundraising, Engagement & Communication

• Manage a small portfolio of donors, including making direct asks to sustain and grow their support through personalized outreach and stewardship.
• Oversee targeted donor segments, such as sustainers and new donors, developing and executing solicitation and engagement strategies, to retain and increase giving.
• Craft and execute donor engagement plans and fundraising communications, including direct solicitations, stewardship messages, impact updates, and personalized proposals, in collaboration with the Director Individual Giving.
• Support the execution of digital campaigns by drafting email content, setting up campaigns in email marketing platforms, and coordinating approvals with the communications team.
• Play a key role in developing and executing direct mail and digital fundraising appeals, including writing, coordinating design, and tracking campaign results.
• Collaborate with program teams to curate compelling stories and develop creative fundraising concepts that connect donor interests with organizational impact.
• Ensure timely acknowledgment of donor contributions and provide meaningful stewardship updates to deepen donor relationships.
• Conduct donor research and analysis to support fundraising strategies.
• Field general supporter inquiries that come into the organization via phone and email, and thank donors as needed, in collaboration with the team.
• Ensure donor records are regularly and properly updated in Salesforce with the most recent communications, campaign initiative documentation, research data, in the news articles and other pertinent information.
• Take on additional tasks, including administrative, as needed to achieve team objectives.

Event Management

• Lead all individual giving fundraising events and support or lead other organizational events led by Development and Communications as needed.
• Project manage events and manage event logistics, including venue coordination, guest lists and communications, RSVPs, vendor management, and volunteer coordination.
• Collaborate with the Director of Individual Giving, communications team, and other stakeholders to ensure events align with organizational goals.
• Develop event-related materials (e.g., invitations, agendas, post-event reports) and provide post-event analysis to refine future efforts.

Data Management & Digital Strategy Support

• Manage donor data and research tools, including donor wealth screening platforms, ensuring integration with Salesforce.
• Provide training and guidance on donor research tools and processes to other team members as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required; equivalent work experience in fundraising, communications, or nonprofit engagement will be considered.
• At least 3-5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, donor engagement, or related roles, with a focus on communications and individual giving.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong writing and storytelling skills, with experience crafting donor-facing communications (emails, direct mail, solicitations, etc.).
• Proficiency with email marketing platforms, donor management software (Salesforce preferred), and wealth screening tools.
• Knowledge of direct mail strategy and execution is a plus.
• Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and effectively utilize tools like Asana to manage tasks and workflows, or a willingness to learn.
• Analytical skills to interpret donor data and apply insights to campaigns and strategies.

Leadership & Interpersonal Skills

• Collaborative mindset, with the ability to work across teams (fundraising, communications, programs, and finance).
• Self-motivated and detail-oriented, with a commitment to donor stewardship.
• Commitment to equity, inclusion, and respectful communication across diverse teams and communities.

• Ability to attend in-person donor meetings and events, including evenings and weekends as needed.

Position Logistics

Location: Our work is performed mostly remotely (apart from our Habitat Restoration Staff) with periodic in-person staff and team meetings in our office based in Oakland, CA, and our various restoration sites around the San Francisco Bay Area. Employees must reside in California / Bay Area

Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time, non-exempt position and expected work hours are 9 to 5:30 Monday through Friday. The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $90,000, based on experience. We offer an excellent benefit package including medical, dental, vision, acupuncture/chiropractic, and life insurance; 12 paid vacation days per year to start, 13-14 paid holidays and 12 days of sick leave per calendar year; 403(b) retirement plan; stipend for working remotely and funds for home office workstation equipment and furniture.
