About Texas Campaign for the Environment Fund (TCE Fund) & TCE
TCE Fund’s mission is to engage people and communities through face-to-face public education, grassroots organizing and action-oriented research for a cleaner and healthier Texas. TCE is the state’s leading canvass-based environmental advocacy group, directly influencing public policy through community-based lobbying. Both organizations lead local, statewide and national issue campaigns to fight pollution, especially fossil fuel facilities that harm communities and worsen climate pollution. TCE Fund and TCE promote clean economy solutions such as Zero Waste and renewable energy.

Summary
In Brazoria County, there are currently numerous proposals to construct new fossil fuel export facilities and expand existing ones. In this role, you will be responsible for strategic collaboration with our established coalition and for building additional capacity to fight these oil and gas export facilities. You will also identify and develop local leadership to broaden the base of resistance to fossil fuel exports and related infrastructure in Brazoria County. 

This is a full-time grant-funded position (currently resourced through December 2022), which is likely to be extended through December 2023 at minimum. You will report directly to TCE Fund’s Deputy Director.

Major Functions and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with allies and TCE regional organizing staff to connect supporters with existing organizations to create more volunteer capacity and a larger donor base within our coalition, plus add at least 50 individuals to actively resist the industrial build-out. 
  • Support organizations and individuals in strategic messaging and advocacy, planning and executing direct actions, research projects, and policy analysis on tax incentives/abatements and impacts on marine ecosystems, the tourism economy and public health. 
  • Engage supporters to participate in volunteer efforts such as reaching out to others in the community, participating in public meetings or demonstrations on pollution permits and industrial infrastructure. 
  • Work with local activists to develop leadership, public speaking, advocacy and direct action training for area residents. 
  • Develop and execute corporate strategies targeting fossil fuel export companies and their executives, investors, insurers, and/or potential customers. 
  • Mobilize community members around applications for local and school district tax abatements, Industrial District Agreements, and local, state and federal pollution permits for export facilities and pipeline infrastructure. 
  • Collaborate with allies and TCE regional organizing staff to execute traditional and social media strategies to highlight the dangers associated with the expansion of fossil fuel export infrastructure. 
  • Organize briefings for candidates to heighten awareness of the human, environmental, and financial implications of new and expanding export facilities.
  • Identify, educate and mobilize pro-environment voters. 

Qualifications 

  • Proven experience in grassroots community organizing, with a preference for environmental and/or social justice work. 
  • Understanding of advocacy strategies. 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated competency working with diverse audiences, including but not limited to elected officials, community leaders, coalition partners and the general public. 
  • Proficiency with MS Office and Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc. Other proficiencies such as constituent relations management software, digital advocacy tools, project management platforms, graphic design (Adobe Creative Suite), and/or voter databases given strong preference. 
  • Ability to quickly analyze and synthesize complex information. 
  • A keen eye for design, page layout, and general presentation for public-facing campaign materials. 
  • Additional experience in canvassing, online organizing, political campaigns, and/or direct action would also be welcome. Spanish speaking and writing skills are a plus.

  • Available to travel throughout the state, particularly along the Gulf Coast, with occasional trips out of state. 
  • Experience in the Coastal Bend is strongly preferred. 
  • TCE will require proof of full COVID-19 vaccination of anyone who is to be hired for this position. Reasonable accommodations for documented exemptions may be considered.

Compensation
Annual salary range $35,000-$46,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes insurance coverage (medical/dental/vision, including an HSA account with employer contribution), 401K, paid time off, public transportation and parking, flex/comp time. 

Location
Freeport (applicants from Greater Houston will be considered, occasional travel may be required in the future)
