Position

Public Lab, the largest community science organization in the world, seeks an Executive Director to scale the organization and increase its impact. This is an ideal role for a leader who can translate vision and strategy into executable action, establish clear measures for success and oversee day-to-day progress toward goals. The Executive Director will ensure the long-term financial stability of Public Lab by attracting resources, support and partnerships.  This person will be the primary vision holder for a largely remote staff and global community and will facilitate collaborations to achieve on-the-ground improvements in environmental conditions in communities.

Responsibilities

Executive Leadership & Management

  • Lead the refinement and implementation of the strategic plan while ensuring that the budget, staff and priorities align with Public Lab’s core mission
  • Manage day-to-day operations of Public Lab to achieve stated organizational goals while managing for current and future growth
  • Establish long-term financial stability by overseeing finances, stewarding existing funder relationships, cultivating new ones and delivering on grant goals
  • Implement a workplace structure that emphasizes accountability, transparency, process and results
  • Build out the development, communications and programs team, structures, policies and practices as needed to implement strategy and ensure continual progress toward mission attainment
  • Cultivate strong and transparent working relationships with the board and ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic and impact performance against stated milestones and goals
  • Build a diverse and inclusive Board representative of the community that is highly engaged and willing to leverage and secure resources
  • Provide leadership and direction to staff and ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization including the establishment of effective decision-making and collaboration processes that will enable Public Lab to achieve its long-and short-term goals and objectives
  • Foster a positive, cohesive, deeply engaged team that embraces change
  • Promote a culture that embraces egalitarian values, appreciation, transparency and results
  • Ensure consistency, alignment and buy-in throughout Public Lab’s strategy, operational methods and data collection needs and ensure each team member understands the impact of their role on achieving strategic goals and the mission

Program and Impact Growth

  • Oversee the cultivation and growth of Public Lab’s local and in-depth projects as well as large-scale national advocacy campaigns
  • Increase efforts to use data gathered by the Public Lab community to change policy and institute concrete community impacts
  • Secure a wide range of community, institutional and other partnerships and provide community guidance on partner engagement to support mission achievement
  • Formulate and execute comprehensive marketing, branding and development strategies that will ensure consistency throughout the organization, enhance revenues and elevate national awareness of Public Lab, its work and the work of individual staff

Qualifications

  • Alignment with Public Lab’s mission, vision and values
  • Demonstrated ability to build, manage and implement day-to-day operations
  • Demonstrated understanding of environmental policy, science and/or technology, with a background in community or citizen science preferred
  • Demonstrated fundraising and financial management success
  • Experience building strong, cohesive teams and leading them through change
  • Emotional intelligence, integrity and excellent communication and listening skills
  • Comfort with collaborative decision-making and consensus
  • Commitment to environmental justice and equity, with experience leading grassroots organizations preferred
