Job Description

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) seeks a dynamic Executive Director devoted to our mission and deeply committed to equity and justice.

About PSR

PSR is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to create a more healthy, just, and peaceful world. PSR’s national office is located in Washington, D.C., with chapters across the United States.

Founded in 1961, PSR has throughout its history provided a strong health-focused voice against the development and use of nuclear weapons. PSR is a co-founder and U.S. affiliate of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), and as the U.S. affiliate of this global network, PSR shared in the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize. PSR is also a partner organization in the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.

In the 1990s, PSR joined the growing movement to address another existential threat: climate change. Since then, the organization has addressed a range of issues related to a just transition from fossil fuels to clean, safe, truly renewable energy. Current areas of focus include opposing fracked gas and the false promise of hydrogen, promoting equitable building decarbonization, and optimal health for all.

  • Experience working with legislators and policymakers in Washington, D.C., is desirable but not required.

Core Competencies Sought

DEIJ: PSR seeks an Executive Director with experience leading or being involved in DEIJ initiatives throughout an organization, among partners, as part of an organization’s programs, and in relationships with funders. PSR’s governing board is committed to embracing DEIJ principles across its members and striving for PSR to live DEIJ values through its organizational culture and practices, as well as within each of its advocacy programs.

Operations and Finance: PSR seeks a leader with significant experience in an executive or senior management role in a nonprofit, governmental, academic, or private sector organization. Experience could include supporting a staff, managing a budget, complying with financial reporting standards, and/or helping to create and implement strategic and operational plans.

Foundations & Donor Relations Skills: The Executive Director should be able to articulate the significance of PSR’s work and build a strong connection with individual and institutional donors as well as other funding partners.
