Job Description

CEED, the Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy, is searching for an Executive Director who will pilot the organization through the successful integration of two essential functions as: a) the longstanding community-based grassroots organization that leads environmental research, education and organizing efforts for environmental justice initiatives in the Midwest, and b) the organization that operates as a national actor,  providing significant structural and operational support for a series of joint environmental and environmental justice initiatives underway at the national level.

In this moment, CEED links its deep roots in locally-focused research and action with the institutional power of large, long-standing, multifaceted environmental organizations.  This is a time of great opportunity to advance the goals of securing a healthy and vibrant environment for all communities in current and future generations.  The Executive Director will be responsible for growing the capacity of committed staff to continue delivering on environmental justice commitments through CEED’s own local and regional work, while amplifying the capacity and work of other environmental and environmental justice organizations around the country.

We seek to formalize and continue to build our independent organizational infrastructure while broadening, deepening and sustaining support for our partners and a vibrant, healthy movement. Towards this end, CEED seeks an experienced and inspirational leader who can motivate, build, and execute thoughtful and ambitious strategies while ensuring operational excellence.

We are looking for a connector with rapid situational assessment and diplomacy skills.  In addition to demonstrated environmental justice leadership, the role requires significant experience in nonprofit management, staff management, change management, strategic planning, and organizational planning to grow CEED in this period. Inclusive leadership skills, and experience creating and maintaining an organizational culture that attracts, motivates, and retains a diverse, talented staff are essential.

As CEED serves in part to provide environmental justice organizations with data and information that can be used to support on-the-ground education and organizing around environmental concerns, graduate-level research experience is desirable, as is demonstrated fundraising experience and a history of successful interaction with potential donors. Women, people of color, LGBTQIA community members, and members of other historically disenfranchised populations are strongly encouraged to apply.
This position is remote – relocation to the Midwest is not required – however, US residency is required, as regular travel within the US, including travel to the Twin Cities and Washington, D.C., is part of the job. Because our Board and staff members live and work in multiple parts of the US and beyond, the ability to navigate and manage a remote working environment is critical in this role.

How to Apply
