Job Description

Tualatin Riverkeepers Executive Director

Apply by Friday, September 23rd, 2022

Who we are: Tualatin Riverkeepers is a community-based organization that protects and restores the Tualatin River watershed. We build watershed stewardship through engagement, advocacy, restoration, access, and education.

At Tualatin Riverkeepers, we envision a thriving watershed that acts as a valuable community resource for everyone, and strive to exist at the intersection of environmental justice, protection, and conservation so that we all have equitable access to clean water, healthy ecosystems, and enjoyable river opportunities.

Where we’ve been: The Tualatin River was once the most polluted river in Oregon. Formed in 1990 in response to the “Westside Bypass” highway project by residents worried about the loss of rural and farmland, Tualatin Riverkeepers recognized that people had to be aware of the river in order to protect it. The past 32 years have seen significant restoration and clean-up of the Tualatin River and it now provides drinking water for half a million residents and is used and appreciated by thousands. In 2021 a 38.5-mile segment of the river, between Rood Bridge Park in Hillsboro and the river’s confluence with Willamette, was designated as a National Water Trail.

Where we’re going: Continued pressure from suburban development, the rapid spread of invasive species, climate change impacts, and erosion of the riverbanks require a constant effort to protect the river. Tualatin Riverkeepers provides a unique voice for the river, helping to coordinate efforts to protect and preserve the waterway, and educating people and continuing to bring equitable access and awareness to the thousands of Washington and Clackamas County residents who may not yet fully appreciate this invaluable resource. By building partnerships, Tualatin Riverkeepers seeks to expand its role in educating the community about the value of the river, the important role it plays in our communities, and opportunities to protect, enjoy, and enhance it.

The Executive Director Opportunity: The director will work closely with an energized staff of program managers, as well as law students and environmental science interns, summer river rental staff, many volunteers, and a dedicated board to help Tualatin Riverkeepers meet the opportunities in the watershed.  Building and nurturing relationships among the diverse groups and people that are involved with the river is a key feature of this position. Sharing your passion for the river will build support for our programs and foster new community commitments to the river, and expand our base of donors and funders that support us. As the community becomes more aware of the threats to our environment, you’ll play a leading role in inspiring, leading, and partnering with people to learn about and protect this important natural and cultural resource.
