Full-Time Energy Conservation Engineer

Job Description

Responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and overseeing the school system’s programs and initiatives for energy conservation including monitoring the school system’s energy management plan. The position is considered essential personnel for emergency situations, including weekends and remote work. Extensive in-county travel to schools is required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Maintains and uploads energy/utilities data for all AACPS facilities’ energy accounts into energy databases.
  2. Analyzes large datasets such as energy usage and bill analysis.
  3. Assists in performing technical energy audits, ECM pay-back calculations, and associated technical reports.
  4. Provides energy database support for tracking and reporting of energy conservation measures (ECM).
  5. Identifies and manages all utility rebate applications and incentives related to new school construction, renovations, and energy efficiency projects.
  6. Collaborates with facilities department and school-based staff to provide optimum facility comfort while reducing energy consumption levels.
  7. Visits schools regularly to promote energy conservation activities and energy management program to encourage school participation in energy programs and train school-based operations staff in the use of HVAC controls and other energy management equipment.
  8. Assists in the review of design development drawings, construction plans and specifications, and monitors all energy management related construction activities.
  9. Assists in ensuring that the school system’s construction program is supplied regular, appropriate and professional energy related feedback in order for schools to obtain Maryland Green School status and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, industrial or electrical engineering, or related field such as data science with emphasis on energy management, energy conservation, or facilities management from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Four (4) years of experience in energy management, mechanical systems design, construction technology, or other closely related energy field; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification issued by The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Accredited Professional (LEED-AP) Certification issued by the U.S. Green Building Council within two (2) years of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possess a valid Maryland or state of legal residence Class C Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, plus proof of a good driving record, and have daily access to reliable transportation.
