Job Description

One Hundred Miles is dedicated to protecting and preserving Georgia’s 100-mile coast through advocacy, education, and citizen engagement.

One Hundred Miles is seeking a Savannah-area-based Education Coordinator who will assist in developing and delivering high-quality education initiatives that increase Georgians’ knowledge of and engagement with our coastal resources in Savannah and across Georgia’s 100-mile coast. The Coordinator will manage various advocacy education and environmental education (EE) programs and initiatives across the coast, increase One Hundred Miles (OHM)’s presence at community outreach events, develop and strengthen partnership opportunities, and help recruit and manage volunteers across the Savannah area. The position is expected to be a visible and outward-facing community member, leading engaging programs and educating learners of all ages.

Responsibilities may vary based on the candidate selected, but major projects will include:

Education and Outreach

  • Manage logistics and marketing for annual Conservation in Action: Choosing to Lead programming (leadership-building trainings, series, conference, etc.)
  • Work with the VP of Education and Communications to develop and lead a new health initiative that increases access to our coastal environment for underserved communities and educates new audiences
  • Develop and lead advocacy education programs and hands-on training series that help community members build the skills they need to speak out for our coast
  • Develop engaging digital programs and videos that educate online learners of a variety of ages about Georgia’s 100-mile coast and coastal issues
  • Represent OHM at community outreach events (i.e., Earth Day Festivals, CoastFest, etc.); plan and present engaging age-appropriate outreach activities
  • Set ambitious goals and regularly measure educational reach and conduct and report out regular program evaluations
  • Other duties as assigned by the VP of Education & Communications

Education Communications and Interpretive Tools

  • Assist with the creation of education communication materials (i.e., print/digital learning materials, interactive nature guides and interpretive materials, and leadership training guides)
  • Work with the VP of Education and Communications to create educational displays and interpretive tools for outreach and community education
  • Work with the media to promote assigned programs and meet program goals

Volunteer Coordination

  • Recruit volunteers in communities across Chatham, Effingham, McIntosh, and surrounding counties
  • Work with the Brunswick-based Coastal Education Coordinator to develop and implement a training and engagement program for volunteers; work with staff throughout the organization to identify and match volunteers to appropriate opportunities
  • Help to plan an annual volunteer appreciation event and other recognitions throughout the year

Required Skills and Qualifications

We are looking for a talented and driven individual to accelerate our efforts, and the successful candidate must have:

  • At least 3-5 years of formal or nonformal environmental education experience or advocacy education experience
  • Knowledge of current techniques and best practices in the field of nonformal education
  • Proven experience developing, promoting, and teaching interactive programs for a variety of ages and backgrounds
  • Comfortable working as an advocate and publicly advocating for OHM’s conservation positions
  • Commitment to environmental justice and to increasing equitable access to the natural world
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, including the ability to translate complex issues into relatable, easy-to-understand ideas and action opportunities
  • Knowledge of coastal ecosystems and conservation issues in Georgia is a plus
  • Familiarity with WordPress, MailChimp, social media, and other digital platforms a plus; design and video production experience a plus
  • Strong attention to detail; ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to juggle multiple high-priority projects and meet deadlines
  • Sense of humor, flexibility, positivity, and passion for increasing equitable access to the natural world

This position will be based in the Savannah, GA, area (Chatham or surrounding counties). However, it will require the employee to regularly travel to deliver programs across the coast, to OHM’s Brunswick office, and occasionally to other parts of the state as needed. The Education Coordinator will be expected to regularly work Saturdays, weekends, and/or evenings to staff appropriate program needs (a Tuesday-Saturday schedule or similar schedule may be required).

This full-time position will support educational efforts for coastal Georgia. The ideal candidate must appreciate the uniqueness of Georgia’s coastal environment, communities, and cultures.
