The Ecologist position at Edwards Air Force Base will provide support for habitat management associated with the Piute Ponds complex on Edwards AFB. The Piute Ponds complex is a series of ponds that are connected by a series of weirs and are fed by treated waste water. The ponds support a diverse array of flora and fauna, have different features, see different uses (e.g. waterfowl hunting, bird watching, environmental education), and are distinct in their own ways. The Ecologist will update the Piute Ponds Management Plan using scientifically based strategies to develop a set of overall goals and objectives to improve habitat diversity while also creating specific goals and objectives for each pond within the complex to account for their unique features and attributes. The management plan will not just be a plan, it will be a document to be implemented for active management of the ponds. The plan will not only include guidance for flora and fauna, it will need to include details about water management, sedimentation, evaporation, transpiration, and soils. The Ecologist will be required to review the scientific literature supporting the guidance and actions put forth in the management plan. The literature will be cited in the management plan.
The Ecologist will be responsible for coordinating with contractors and overseeing infrastructure improvement projects at Edwards AFB. CEMML will be issuing a construction contract to support earth work projects within the Piute Ponds complex. Objectives for these projects include (1) allowing unobstructed water flow through the Piute Ponds complex, (2) improving infrastructure to support future management activities, (3) allowing proper water flow from Piute Ponds complex to the Rosamond dry lake, and (4) securing board weirs from unauthorized use. These projects may include removal of cattail and bulrush, dredging to direct water flow, improvements to levees, and the addition of, or maintenance of, weirs to control water flow. There are existing designs available from a prior contractor but a Colorado State University Engineer will be reviewing plans and making suggestions for improvement if necessary. The Ecologist may have the opportunity to provide input on the design plans if they have the that experience and skillset. All infrastructure improvement work will need to be coordinated with Edwards AFB, progress communicated on a regular basis to Edwards AFB Natural Resources personnel, and tracked regularly by the Ecologist.
The Ecologist will be responsible for monthly reporting requirements, communicating with the Principal Investigator, and maintaining a good working relationship with all Edwards AFB points of contact. A full scope of work will be provided upon hire. Additional tasks may be assigned by the Edwards AFB natural resource team but must be approved by the Principal Investigator. A computer and field vehicle will be provided by CEMML.
