The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) serves as the voice of the American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI’s membership is comprised of integrated and electric arc furnace steelmakers, and associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. The American steel industry has the lowest carbon intensity of all major steel producing regions and continues to improve its sustainability performance. Furthermore, steel is a critical material in all clean energy and low-carbon technologies enabling the decarbonization of America’s economy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Conduct research and provide technical assistance to the AISI Sustainability Group, in support of its overall mission to advance the sustainability position of the American steel industry and credibly establish steel as a sustainable material choice in all end markets. This position will be responsible for working collaboratively with experts within American steel mills, steel industry product groups, other Institute staff, and various external consultants and other organizations in support of the long-term strategic plan for steel sustainability. This position will report to the Vice President, Sustainability, AISI.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Conduct detailed research on technical and policy-focused sustainability-related topics, including development of justification to support policy activities and analysis of studies and reports published by external groups pertaining to environmental impacts and benefits of steel, steel decarbonization, circularity, and comparative life cycle assessments from competing product industries, and prepare comprehensive reports of findings ranging from brief memos to presentations to detailed reports. Assist with the collection, analysis, reporting and application of life cycle inventory (LCI) data for American steel products, to include ongoing updates, expansion, dissemination, and quality control of the collected data.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on technical sustainability-related topics for internal and external audiences.
  • Provide innovative thinking and strategic advice to advance the sustainability performance and perception of American steel and steel products in trade, policy, and market applications, including construction, infrastructure, automotive, and energy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum B.S. or M.S. degree in a related field, such as engineering or environmental science
  • 5 to 7 years of professional experience preferred
  • Familiarity with production of steel (or other metals) strongly preferred
  • Specific experience with GHG calculation methodologies, LCI data collection and analysis, and carbon emissions reduction strategies strongly preferred
  • Proven research and analytical skills and problem-solving ability
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write technical reports and prepare and deliver presentations
  • Superior time management skills, with ability to successfully manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Proficient with PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
  • Willingness to travel within the U.S. and potentially internationally on occasion
