Job Description

Save the Redwoods League is seeking a Director of Stewardship and Restoration to oversee the League’s restoration and held land and conservation easement stewardship program.  This includes stewardship, restoration, forestry and general natural resource management on the League’s held lands and in partnership with public agency managers on public lands.

As our Director of Stewardship and Restoration, you are the forestry analyst in the League’s Conservation Programs department.  You are responsible for analyzing and synthesizing trends in restoration forestry science, forestry policy and regulation, forest economics, the carbon market, and voluntary sustainable forestry certification.  You will recommend and collaboratively implement adaptable redwood forest conservation and management strategies that will protect and enhance coast redwood and giant sequoia ecosystem values on League projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the Chief Program Officer to develop stewardship plans and restoration strategies to enhance forest conditions in the coast redwood and giant sequoia forests
  • Directs the implementation of an ecologically based restoration program to accelerate the return of old-growth redwood forest conditions on League-owned and public lands
  • Leads the Redwoods Rising collaboration with California State Parks and the National Parks Service to restore the logged forests within Redwood National and State Parks
  • Manages the design, development and implementation of stewardship on held lands; coordinates the broad organizational interests in the stewardship and active use of key League held properties (including from the Conservation Programs team, Development, Marketing & Communications, volunteer engagement, etc.)
  • Serves as restoration forestry and land management expert to enhance redwood forest conservation and management policies
  • Provides technical expertise to support the conservation planning efforts to prioritize land protection and restoration activities
  • Elevates and integrates restoration program priorities; contributes to senior leadership team discussions and strategic organizational development and decision-making
  • Promotes best practices to enhance coast redwood and giant sequoia ecosystem condition; works with the Director of Science and Conservation Planning to develop and implement studies that evaluate the efficacy of restoration treatments that result in better understanding of best restoration practices
  • Advises on the selection of research grants to improve the understanding of redwood conservation and restoration practices
  • Understands restoration forestry science to set harvested forests on a trajectory to regain old-growth forest form and function; recommends stewardship and management of old-growth forest grove; integrates ecologically based fire management practices
  • Enhances forest quality on timberlands through working forest conservation easements

Outreach Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with key public and private partners in the redwood region, including researchers and land managers, to share data, forestry expertise, and latest understanding in redwood forest management
  • Represents the League in conservation partnerships and speaking engagements
  • Develops and implements forestry and forest science into the League’s educational curriculum and outreach activities
  • Maintains a network of public and private forestry colleagues to facilitate collaboration and information exchange

Team Management

  • Supervises the Stewardship and Restoration team to develop and implement forest restoration and management plans on held properties, and in monitoring the conservation easements and working forest easements
  • Provides expertise to the Acquisition team in support of all land transactions that contain stewardship obligations or forest restoration and management; assesses the value of operable timber land for acquisition; develops budgets and forest management plans for potential League acquisitions
  • Supervises the Forest Ecologist in planning, implementing, and monitoring restoration projects
  • Recruits, manages, trains, motivates, supports and empowers the Restoration and Stewardship team; provides direction and input for the team and each team member

Qualifications:

  • M.S. in forestry, ecology, conservation biology, conservation land management, or related field
  • At least 7 years of work experience in the study and synthesis of forest ecosystems and their conservation needs
  • California Registered Professional Forester license preferred
  • Excellent analytical skills required; ability to assemble, assess and organize data, to conduct analyses and propose practical recommendations on technical issues
  • Ability to synthesize primary scientific literature and communicate important findings to a broad audience; able to tailor message to different audiences
  • Strong supervisory and team management experience; ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and manage performance of an experienced multi-disciplinary team
  • Advanced skills in GIS modeling are desirable
  • Understanding of redwood forest science, climate science, and forest restoration concepts and principles
  • Understanding of federal, California state, and local regulatory framework is desirable
  • Understanding of California tribes and application of indigenous knowledge to forest restoration and stewardship is desirable
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to communicate and interact effectively with people across cultures, ethnic groups, and identities; verbal and written fluency in a language other than English is desirable
  • Strong project management skills and willingness to participate as a member of a team are required
  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking abilities required
  • Ability to handle multiple complex tasks under pressure and stringent time constraints
  • Strong experience with Microsoft SharePoint, Teams, and Office365 programs, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent travel predominantly within California; valid driver’s license and safe driving record
  • Some weekend and evening responsibilities, including overnight trips
  • Occasionally required to hike through forest land while working off-site, including walking on uneven ground, climbing over obstacles, and accessing remote locations
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds
  • Regularly sits at a desk or computer workstation; utilizes computers, telephones and other office equipment; moves about the office to collaborate with colleagues
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds
